Scenes of the majestic Eifel Tower in Paris, France, burning uncontrollably were widely shared among many social media users around the world. However, we found these claims to be nothing but just another fabrication. Let’s look at the viral photo and video content.

Social Media Posts

A series of photos and videos viral on Facebook and other social media platforms claimed that the iconic Eifel Tower in Paris was on fire, as seen below.

Other identical posts on Facebook can be found here and here, also on X here. The videos were especially viral on TikTok, with millions of views.

Fact Check

A keyword search yielded no such news coverage on any reliable international media related to a recent fire related to the Eifel Tower. Also, no such information or statement was released when we checked about the Eiffel Tower`s official X, Instagram, and Facebook handles. 

While the viral claims about the Eiffel Tower on a big fire were primarily made around January 16, the tower authorities even posted a video on January 19 in which the tower is covered with snow as winter peaks in Europe.

We also noticed that one of the viral short clips was taken from a YouTube video published on July 2023 by the user @Augmented_One with the caption: “Eiffel Tower burning VFX.” as seen here.

Again, an India-based news organization published a story on January 22, in which Indians were chanting “Ram Mandir” in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris in honour of the consecration of the newly completed Hindu temple Ram Mandir.

Conclusion

While photos are AI-generated imaginary, there is no such evidence that the Eiffel Tower caught fire in January 2024. The tower is often an appetiser for rumours targeted with bomb threats or misinformation campaigns such as being engulfed in fire .
