The video spoke about the spill gates of the Senanayake Samudraya being opened after 12 years. As a result, naturally, many users assumed the scenes were attributed to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Senanayake_Samudraya\">Senanayake Samudraya<\/a>, which is the biggest reservoir and man-made lake in\u00a0Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fact Check\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We found that actually all the sluice gates of Senanayake Saumudraya were opened around two weeks ago, on January 10, 2024, due to substantial rainfall across the Eastern Province. Mohamed Riyas, Deputy Director, Disaster Management Centre, Ampara, stated that the sluice gates were opened as the capacity of the reservoir exceeded the limit to safeguard the Dam and the public of the district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This noteworthy incident received extensive coverage as a headline in various media outlets.\u00a0 Numerous social media posts circulated to highlight and discuss the event of the sluice gates opening of Senanayake Samudraya after 12 years. The year 2011 was the last time when all sluice gates of Senanayake Samudraya were opened. It is Kalaweva (Kalawavi) from Anuradhapura district in Sri Lanka. The spill gate setup and the surroundings match that of the viral video, confirming the location as Kalawewa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, due to the continuous heavy rainfall, spill gates of Kalawewa Reservoir have also been opened several times in the recent past, and the people living downstream were warned to exercise caution and stay vigilant due to the increased water capacity released from Kalawewa.
