A post carrying an image claimed to be of a rare flower called \u201cNagapushapa\u201d blooming in the Himalayas has appeared in numerous Facebook posts around the world.  Sri Lankan Facebook page by the name \u201cAndaree\u201d had posted this image stating in Sinhala \u201c\u0db8\u0dda \u0dad\u0db8\u0dba\u0dd2 \u0dc4\u0dd2\u0db8\u0dcf\u0dbd \u0dc0\u0db1\u0dba\u0dda \u0db4\u0dd2\u0db4\u0dd9\u0db1 \u0daf\u0dd4\u0dbb\u0dca\u0dc5\u0db9 \u0db1\u0dcf\u0d9c \u0dbb\u0dcf\u0da2 \u0db8\u0dbd. \u0dbd\u0dba\u0dd2\u0d9a\u0dca \u0d91\u0d9a\u0d9a\u0dca \u0daf\u0dcf\u0dbd\u0dcf \u0dba\u0dcf\u0dbd\u0dd4\u0dc0\u0db1\u0dca\u0da7\u0dad\u0dca \u0db5\u0dbd\u0db1\u0dca\u0db1 \u0dc1\u0dd9\u0dba\u0dcf \u0d9a\u0dbb\u0db1\u0dca\u0db1\u201d translated to English it means \u201cThis is the rare Nagaraja flower that blooms in the Himalayas. This image has since been posted by a number of Facebook users as well, but these posts have not received lot of attention as compared to the original post. Here are some of the instances where this image had been shared in the last few months<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, most of the recent comments to the original post were in denial of the claim hence we decided to do a fact check on it and find the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fact check<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We did a simple Google Reverse Image<\/a> search on the image and found that this image was being used heavily on social media including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Many of them claimed that this is a rare flower named \u201cNagapushpa\u201d from Himalayas. Numerous Facebook posts from Indonesia claimed that this is a flower by the name Megapushpa, which blooms on the summit of the Jayawijaya Mountains, Indonesia<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We also observed a number of fact checks on similar claims that this is a rare flower blooming every 36 years in the Himalalyas and Snopes had debunked these claims way back in 2016 identifying that this \u2018flower\u2019 is in fact a type of marine invertebrate known as a sea pen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
