At a time when racism and issues relating to skin colour are being debated and discussed in societies across the world, a photo claiming to be the model with the darkest skin in the world is once again going viral. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Social Media Posts:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The viral claims state, “Nyakim Gatwech, a model from South Sudanese Woman with the darkest complexion in the world.” <\/em>The posts carry a photo of a lady with a dark complexion, as seen below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We also found multiple other posts with the caption, \u201cSudanese model Nyakim enters Guinness Book of Records for having the darkest skin tone on Earth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is the claim true? Does the model really hold such a record? Let\u2019s find out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fact Check:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

We ran a Reverse Image Search and a keyword search on Google and found a few articles and the featured model\u2019s Wikipedia page. From there, we learned that her name was Nyakim Gatwech, and she is an American of South Sudanese descent. Her Wikipedia page<\/a> does not mention any Guinness Record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following this, we looked up the official website of Guinness World Records and checked to see if there was a category for Dark Skin in its human body segment<\/a>. But we failed to find any such section on skin tone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, we checked social media platforms to see if there had been any recent posts or announcements about such a category related to skin complexion. We came across a tweet,<\/a> dated 28 April 2020, with the comment, \u201cFake news alert Guinness World Records does not monitor records for skin tone\u201d on the Guinness World Records’ official Twitter handle. They had quoted a false claim to highlight the statement. However, the false tweet has later been removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Posted right below is a screenshot of a conversation<\/a> between a Twitter user and the model, from which it is clear that the model Nyakim Gatwech, too, is unaware of any such recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nyakim Gatwech<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Nyakim Gatwech, an American model of African\u00a0descent<\/strong><\/a> with naturally dark skin, has gained a lot of fame on social media under the name “Queen Of The Dark.” We noticed that one of the photos posted on her Instagram account<\/a> had been used to spread the false claim that Nyakim Gatwech has the darkest skin colour in the world. After Nyakim left Sudan and came to America, she was often ridiculed for her dark skin colour as a child. A short video about her is below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
