Photos of natural phenomenon are shared and received with great amazement on social media. These unbelievable photos often attract lot of engagements on social media. Sometimes images misattributed to global agencies\/celebrities are shared widely as social media users deem them true. A picture claimed to be an image of sun\u2019s surface captured by NASA went viral on social media stream during the past few weeks. However, Factcrescendo Sri Lanka\u2019s investigation revealed that the claims had erroneously credited to photograph to NASA, which in fact was an artistically edited image by an American photographer Jason Guenzel<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A number of Facebook users shared an image claimed to be of the surface of the sun as seen below along with the caption \u201cThe clearest picture of the Sun surface published by NASA\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sinhala version of this post shared widely claiming the same in the caption \u201c\u0dc3\u0dd6\u0dbb\u0dca\u0dba\u0dba\u0dcf\u0d9c\u0dda<\/strong> <\/strong>\u0db4\u0dd0\u0dc4\u0dd0\u0daf\u0dd2\u0dbd\u0dd2\u0db8<\/strong> <\/strong>\u0db4\u0dd2\u0db1\u0dca\u0dad\u0dd6\u0dbb\u0dba<\/strong> <\/strong>NASA \u0d86\u0dba\u0dad\u0db1\u0dba<\/strong> <\/strong>\u0db8\u0d9c\u0dd2\u0db1\u0dca<\/strong> <\/strong>\u0db8\u0dd4\u0daf\u0dcf\u0dc4\u0dd0\u0dbb\u0db4\u0dd4<\/strong>\u201d. Fact Check <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We did a reverse image search of the viral image, which led us to an online art market website called \u201cFine Art America\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here we noticed a Michigan based photographer named Jason Guenzel had uploaded the viral image on January 16, 2021, along with the caption \u201cMagnetic Sun: A stylized rendition of a solar close-up. This image highlights the turbulent magnetic field on the visible surface of our star<\/em>\u201d as seen below in his photo album titled \u201cSolar System<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\nBuy Art Online<\/a>\n\n\n\n

We did further investigation and found a tweet on Guenzel\u2019s Twitter account on 13th<\/sup> January 2021 with the same image. He had clearly mentioned in the caption that the picture is a \u201cheavily software-processed image of the solar chromosphere reveals the complex nature of the magnetic field within our star<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We found a post on Guenzel\u2019s Facebook page with a detail explanation about the image as seen below, which gives details about the telescope he had used to capture the image as \u201cTelescope Info: Explore Scientific AR152, Daystar Quark Chromosphere, ASI174MM-Cool Celestron AVX, December 10, 2020, 1250\/5000 stacked<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
