Let\u2019s look at the viral message in detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Social Media Posts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A widely shared poster titled &#8220;<strong>COVID-19 is immune to organisms with a pH greater than 5.5<\/strong>&#8221; suggests that people should consume alkaline foods to fight the virus. As a result, the poster lists some of the recommended food items with purported pH levels greater than 7, as shown below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXfu9ZKRjDD6t2sDDMDnbuHPbe6HyW0dPFLkjKttd6GyalaRW3URjUVMaUnrA4Y8PQwf3RpofndBC1a3I9mt0IP05Eu_4t_owKM4zeG3mDMFPmYsFGcF1foOrS2oc23MThgUFXfBLRVPKQ9NZDiPjdk?key=Uts7A69cWvwtpgDfpzUUUQ\" alt=\"A screenshot of a phone\n\nDescription automatically generated\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/793437318271090\/?multi_permalinks=1775253376756141&amp;hoisted_section_header_type=recently_seen\">Source<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.awesomescreenshot.com\/image\/54712850?key=145c4d3086c043e998c96bba1346386a\">Archive<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same claim has also been shared virally on WhatsApp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXf7ZZIBMBCzUokqR_wh2wuBA5pxdObiJYNtFmFzWGWsEsft0ptJPW-EKvBzvPVW8yO3BCFXHyTPAwkf2YIXiJVMttU7UKeh2zD1rF2kNmp35iWkx-npePUaxkYNTkWhtuRJZJePhEOxrLHkh6Ot_sc?key=Uts7A69cWvwtpgDfpzUUUQ\" alt=\"A close-up of a sign\n\nDescription automatically generated\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But is there any truth in these claims? Let\u2019s look at the facts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fact-Check<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is the pH scale?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pH scale is used to measure how acidic or basic (alkaline) a liquid solution is, on a scale from 0 to 14:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Solutions with pH 0-6.9 are acidic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>pH 7 represents neutral solutions like pure water<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Solutions with pH 7.1-14 are alkaline (basic)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Each whole number change in pH represents a tenfold change in acidity or alkalinity. For instance, pH 4 is ten times more acidic than pH 5. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/special-topics\/water-science-school\/science\/ph-and-water\">Source<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This scale only applies to aqueous (water-based) solutions. Viruses like SARS-CoV-2 are biological particles, not solutions, so they cannot have pH values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Inaccurate pH Values for Listed Foods<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The claim\u2019s pH values for foods are scientifically incorrect:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Lemon juice:<\/strong>\u00a0pH approximately 2.0 to 3.0, typically around 2.0 to 2.6 (acidic).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Avocado:<\/strong> Near neutral to slightly acidic, with a pH of 6.3 to 6.6 (not highly alkaline and nowhere near pH 14, as food chemistry demonstrates).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Garlic:<\/strong>\u00a0Slightly acidic to neutral, with a pH between 5.3 and 6.3 (not alkaline as claimed)[based on food science principles].<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mango:<\/strong> Slightly acidic, with a pH between 5.8 and 6.0 (not alkaline, consistent with typical fruit pH ranges).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tangerine:<\/strong>\u00a0Acidic, approximately pH 3.0 to 4.1.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pineapple:<\/strong>\u00a0Acidic, about pH 3.2 to 4.0 (not alkaline, as widely documented in food science literature)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Orange:<\/strong>\u00a0 Acidic, with a pH between 3.5 and 4.0 (not alkaline).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These pH values are fundamentally incorrect and invalidate the entire premise of the claim (Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/lemon-juice-acidic-or-alkaline\">1,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caryinstitute.org\/sites\/default\/files\/public\/downloads\/curriculum-project\/4A1_pH_reading.pdf\">2,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idosi.org\/abr\/7(4)13\/4.pdf\">3<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Experts Confirm &#8211; Viruses Do Not Have a pH Level.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The coronavirus does not have a pH value. Viruses are not solutions; they consist of genetic material within a protein capsid. They cannot be measured for acidity or alkalinity. pH measurements only apply to aqueous solutions and their hydrogen ion concentrations. This metric is irrelevant when discussing viruses. (<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/archive-fact-checking-8703572316\">Source<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Sharad Kale, a veteran scientist from India&#8217;s Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, told <a href=\"https:\/\/english.factcrescendo.com\/2020\/04\/10\/no-coronavirus-does-not-have-any-ph-value\/\">Fact Crescendo<\/a> that: \u201c<strong><em>The coronavirus does not have a pH. This statement is baseless\u2026 scientifically wrong, which makes it meaningless to claim that alkaline foods can prevent coronavirus infection<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He further emphasised that while a healthy diet is essential, it does not protect against COVID-19. Instead, people should follow public health guidelines from organisations like the World Health Organisation (WHO).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sarah Stanley, Associate Professor of Infectious Diseases, further clarified that pH only applies to water-based solutions, and diet cannot alter the body&#8217;s tightly regulated pH levels in blood, cells, and tissues. While a healthy diet supports general immunity, there is no evidence that alkaline foods specifically help prevent or treat COVID-19. While dietary changes may influence urinary pH, they cannot alter blood or cellular pH levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Source of Confusion:<\/strong> The message may stem from a misreading of <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.asm.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1128\/jvi.65.4.1916-1928.1991\">a 1991 study<\/a> in the Journal of Virology, which examined how pH levels affected cell fusion in mouse cells infected with a different coronavirus (MHV4). The research did not claim that viruses themselves have pH values, nor did it relate to SARS-CoV-2 or support the use of alkaline foods in prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, the myth about \u201calkaline foods fighting disease\u201d has circulated online for years and has been repeatedly debunked by scientists and medical professionals. The variant, initially identified in China, has now spread to multiple countries, including India and the United States. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/india-news\/covid-cases-4-omicron-subvariants-found-in-india-authorities-say-no-need-to-worry-101748273520653.html\">Source<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/gisaid.org\/hcov19-variants\/\">GISAID<\/a>, the global database for tracking virus mutations, NB.1.8.1 was first seen in late April 2025 in travellers from China, France, Japan, the Netherlands, South Korea, and other countries. It is now the dominant strain in China, contributing to a spike in hospital visits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Symptoms of NB.1.8.1:<\/strong> This Omicron descendant presents with symptoms similar to those of past variants, including sore throat, fever, cough, and fatigue. While it may spread more easily, current evidence does not suggest it causes more severe illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do Vaccines Still Work?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes. Since NB.1.8.1 is a variant of Omicron, people who have had previous infections or recent JN.1 vaccines still have good protection against severe illness.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/advisory-committees\/advisory-committee-calendar\/vaccines-and-related-biological-products-advisory-committee-may-22-2025-meeting-announcement\">The FDA<\/a> met on May 22, 2025, to review whether vaccines should be updated to target LP.8.1 (a variant similar to NB.1.8.1). Although Pfizer and Moderna have developed new vaccines with broader protection, the FDA decided to maintain the current JN\u20141 vaccine for now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While vaccines are still recommended for older adults and people at higher risk, new U.S. health policies suggest that healthy children, pregnant women, and adults may no longer be routinely recommended for vaccination, pending further safety and efficacy data. Viruses don&#8217;t have pH values, and the message lists wrong pH values for common foods; many naturally acidic foods are incorrectly labelled as alkaline. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, and the body maintains a strict blood pH level of 7.35 to 7.45, regardless of diet.
