However, after checking, we found that no media outlet has reported the introduction of such a law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Official Police Statement: No New Drunk Driving Fines Introduced<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following this, we reached out to the Police Media Division and Traffic Police Division, both of which confirmed that this information is false and that no such amendment to the Motor Vehicle Act has been made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The official Facebook page of the Sri Lankan Police also posted a statement confirming that this information is false, as shown below<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fweb.facebook.com%2Fsrilankapoliceofficial%2Fposts%2Fpfbid0gruWA5fC3MbxiMGtXtoFUhiAzBhjmuiVw6KGPHPDNEtdYXcj2sTZeBX8yzf9Be9yl&#038;show_text=true&#038;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"654\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this year, the police proposed requesting the court to suspend the driving licenses of drunk drivers for one year; however, this has not yet become law. Below is Fact Crescendo\u2019s investigation on this matter in Sinhala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/2025\/01\/04\/permanent-license-revocation-for-dui-myth-or-fact\/\">\u0db6\u0dd3\u0db8\u0dad\u0dca\u0dc0 \u0dbb\u0dd2\u0dba \u0db0\u0dcf\u0dc0\u0db1\u0dba \u0d9a\u0dc5\u0dc4\u0ddc\u0dad\u0dca \u0dbb\u0dd2\u0dba\u0dd0\u0daf\u0dd4\u0dbb\u0dd4 \u0db6\u0dbd\u0db4\u0dad\u0dca\u200d\u0dbb\u0dba \u0dc3\u0daf\u0dc4\u0da7 \u0db8 \u0d85\u0dc4\u0ddd\u0dc3\u0dd2 \u0dc0\u0db1\u0dc0\u0dcf \u0daf?<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Penalties for Drunk Driving Under Current Legislation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The police have the authority to prosecute drunk drivers in the Magistrate\u2019s Court of the relevant jurisdiction. The court imposes a minimum fine of Rs. 25,000 for such offenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, the driver\u2019s license is suspended for a period of 2 to 3 months.
