With the appointment of Ms. Vraie Cally Balthazaar from the National People\u2019s Power (NPP) party as the mayor of the Colombo Municipal Council, viral claims questioned why the CMC building was being renovated, with some linking this move with the new Mayor. Let\u2019s look at the claim first.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Social Media Posts:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A social media post was shared with a video stating, <strong>\u201cThe Colombo Mayor\u2019s official residence is being renovated for the mayor appointed by Anura\u201d<\/strong>. The video mentions that the <strong>\u201cSirinivasa,\u201d or the official residence of the Colombo mayor, is undergoing renovation<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe frameBorder='0' width='640' height='360' webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen src=\"https:\/\/www.awesomescreenshot.com\/embed?id=41653739&#038;shareKey=397230364323f98ab17ba5b265420140\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/share\/v\/1AjnvnpS2C\/\">Facebook<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the video frames, it is clearly visible that renovations are taking place at the official residence of the Mayor of Colombo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many other social media users had also posted on social media that the official residence was being renovated to accommodate the arrival of the Colombo Mayor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXeenYhOIB8WOONxyvzGpCJhj84Mf0-zR0oNNjYCSq_K_f6zY4GZuXzwm6SpZ8ZZ0yfD2xtN1Gskne_TbSvrqMR6JJIQ4K8-BJEe_PXWQsfozbZl1AX7dZY_52pedYHP_jUjk342JtKTOo3z2Ks8IkQ?key=uMZMqb6WaTW-uYt5IcJ_Cw\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"about:blank\">Facebook<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Newshub website had published a story under the headline, \u201cVraei Balthazaar to reside at the Colombo Mayor\u2019s Office? City Council employees are working very hard!\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXccuM_9mWh4zmbRwY5aWeT5CT6yPFb4QJr7fJJGTUjcVXASA3kf3k1hkTGV7G0HlAdoezZ0aEnuT7gZqoweM64wALvmHFUHm5IUorQQ6AdXQTfdvB8AFg5N2W9Vuwem9FvyScQJ0gQohxYnB5HUVNs?key=uMZMqb6WaTW-uYt5IcJ_Cw\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/5OqBE\">Archived Link<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, through our investigation, we found out that these social media posts are misleading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Response from the Mayor\u2019s Office&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We inquired about this from the Mayor\u2019s Office of the Colombo Municipal Council. The Mayor\u2019s Office stated that renovations have been taking place at the Mayor\u2019s Official residence for the past few days, but it was not for the Mayor\u2019s visit. According to their explanation, the renovations were made because the Mayor\u2019s official residence had been rented for several days for the filming of an Indian movie at a daily rental rate of US$1,200. They further stated that it is expected to provide the residence for such filming opportunities in the future and gain revenue for the Colombo Municipal Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Response of Colombo Mayor.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also inquired with the Mayor of the Colombo Municipal Council, Ms. Vraie Calley Balthazaar, to confirm this. She stated that these renovations and preparations are being done for an Indian movie shoot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mayor further stated that she will work in accordance with the policies followed by the President and the Prime Minister, and will continue to live in her rented house.
