D. Lal Kantha make a threatening statement about the Attorney General?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There has been a claim on social media that Minister K.D. Lal Kantha made a controversial statement about the Attorney General. This comes after his recent remarks on other public figures, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Kt96jgZityI\">Mihintale Chief Priest<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/LalKanthaKD\/posts\/pfbid0dZN8eTBUkH7ZAh5wdTKsWBjwk354YCPWHR6b3Zbh8JdQiG5DfKtLxGN8RsLdArdjl\">the late Nandana Gunathilaka<\/a>, which were already being discussed widely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, during a conference in Colombo on the 21st titled &#8220;Let&#8217;s Read Lenin as a Revolutionary Mark,&#8221; the Minister made statements about political critics which were subjected to <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/W57FrkU_O7w?t=1493\">wide public debate<\/a>. Furthermore, Hiru Digital has confirmed to us that the version being shared is a fake, manipulated copy, and they have never published such a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our fact-check also confirmed that no other mainstream media outlet has broadcast the statement attributed to the Minister. However, on 24 January, during a programme in Kandy, when journalists asked about the criticisms directed at the government regarding the appointments of the Attorney General and the Inspector General of Police, the Minister responded that some failed politicians raise various questions about these appointments. Moreover, he assured that the government would take the <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/2c_CgPCXC0k?t=736\">necessary corrective actions<\/a> promptly.However, at this time, there are no media reports showing that Minister Lal Kantha has made any statements about the Attorney General that are circulating on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Minister Lal Kantha&#8217;s Media Secretary<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We contacted the Minister\u2019s Media Secretary to confirm whether Minister Lal Kantha had made such statements. The Media Secretary clarified that the Minister has not made any statements of this kind on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accordingly, based on the available evidence, it is clear that Minister K.D. Lal Kantha has not publicly made any statements about the Attorney General that are circulating on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Situation Regarding the Attorney General<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2024, the current Attorney General, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ada.lk\/breaking_news\/%E0%B6%B1%E0%B7%80-%E0%B6%B1%E0%B7%93%E0%B6%AD%E0%B7%92%E0%B6%B4%E0%B6%AD%E0%B7%92-%E0%B6%A2%E0%B6%B1%E0%B7%8F%E0%B6%B0%E0%B7%92%E0%B6%B4%E0%B6%AD%E0%B7%92-%E0%B6%B1%E0%B7%93%E0%B6%AD%E0%B7%92%E0%B6%A5-%E0%B6%9A%E0%B7%9A--%E0%B6%92--%E0%B6%B4%E0%B7%8F%E0%B6%BB%E0%B7%92%E0%B6%B1%E0%B7%8A%E0%B6%AF-%E0%B6%BB%E0%B6%AB%E0%B7%83%E0%B7%92%E0%B6%82%E0%B7%84\/11-410760\">K.A. Protestors raised concerns about serious cases, including the abduction of 11 youths, the assassination of Lasantha Wickramathunga, and the Easter Sunday attacks. They suggested there are <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/iqtQexMByAY?t=638\">serious questions about the Attorney General\u2019s actions<\/a> in these cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, later that day, a group of lawyers visited the Attorney General to show support. He stated that he is not above the law and that anyone who believes he made a mistake can appeal to the Court of Appeal or Supreme Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, the <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/jQJMCPGjCj0?t=316\">Bar Association<\/a> issued a statement expressing concern over recent social media posts targeting the Attorney General.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accordingly, discussions about the Attorney General also took place in Parliament, where the Minister of Justice answered opposition questions regarding his position <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=820003441090530\">in this way<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Government Response on Speculation About Removing the Attorney General.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Minister of Justice, Attorney Harshan Nanayakkara, recently stated that <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/q0cbr-y2DyQ?t=1069\">no discussion has taken place in the Cabinet<\/a> about removing the Attorney General or filing an impeachment against him.
