The fishermen said the attack was carried out by Indian Coast Guard and Navy officials. However, the Indian High Commission in Colombo rejected the allegations. Let\u2019s look deeper into the events that transpired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Social Media Posts:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Viral social media posts claimed that a group of Sri Lankan fishermen were subjected to a violent attack by Indian Coast Guard officials. These posts say that Sri Lankan fishermen on two boats, returning from sea off Wannipuwa, were subjected to this attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"638\" height=\"927\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/image-17.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/image-17.png 638w, https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/image-17-206x300.png 206w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 638px) 100vw, 638px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/newsSLBreakingnews\/posts\/pfbid02DjCxVZK3dHFoCy5uhNYZQBPwvwjytHAaHhpVKba2WpbfPizmNPxujXDuN6CPwQwpl\">Facebook<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.awesomescreenshot.com\/image\/58679062?key=175bebf1fb8f4adf5b945c85bacad6f9\">Archived Link<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We looked at different perspectives on this incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Explainer:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>News reports from all major Sri Lankan media outlets reported on an attack on a group of our fishermen at sea. According to these reports, three boats carrying 18 fishermen left from the Wennappuwa Welmannkaree fishing harbour on December 3. On January 29<sup>th,<\/sup> fishermen on two of these boats, who were returning from fishing, were attacked by an unknown group. The fishermen on the third boat were attacked on January 30<sup>th<\/sup>. After the attacks, the injured fishermen were quickly brought ashore and hospitalised, according to media reports on 2<sup>nd<\/sup> February. The reports also stated that a Navy ship had been sent to bring back the fishermen from the other boat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"\u0db8\u0dd4\u0dc4\u0dd4\u0daf\u0dda \u0d87\u0dc0\u0dd2\u0dbd\u0dd9\u0db1 \u0db0\u0dd3\u0dc0\u0dbb \u0d9a\u0ddd\u0db1\u0dca\u0dad\u0dbb | Ada Derana\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vhyPcEy9bhw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the fishermen who were hospitalised after the attacks told the media that a Navy ship had arrived and ordered them to stop their boats. They said a small boat with the <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/vhyPcEy9bhw?t=157\">Indian flag<\/a> later approached them to carry out the attack. One fisherman said, however, that some among the attackers spoke in Sinhala. Another said the attackers asked if the fishermen were carrying drugs in their boats before attacking them. A third fisherman on the boat said that, due to poor visibility, he was not seriously injured, but the attackers <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/hW_kM4vRyXA?t=551\">struck the other fishermen severely<\/a>. BBC News reported the incident with photos of the injured fishermen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sinhala\/articles\/c8d03n18vvno\">this way<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Local Reports&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, our reporter said that the fishermen on two boats, \u2018Dinithi Duwa-1\u2019 and Dinithi Duwa-2, were attacked on January 29. Our reporter further said that the \u2018Sandun Putha\u2019 fishing boat was attacked on December 30 in international waters near the Diego Garcia Islands. They confirmed that the fishermen were attacked violently by a group. The Fisheries Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekaran\u2019s media team said that he visited Colombo National Hospital that day to check on the condition of the fishermen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"329\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/image-19-1024x329.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17301\" srcset=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/image-19-1024x329.png 1024w, https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/image-19-300x96.png 300w, https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/image-19-768x247.png 768w, https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/image-19-1536x494.png 1536w, https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/image-19.png 1662w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After checking on their condition, the minister said that the way the fishermen were attacked was very brutal. He added that the fishermen accused a group of Indians of carrying out the attack. However, the Indian government has stated that its officials were not involved.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The minister said that if another group used Indian names, flags, and language to commit this crime, it would be a disgrace to India and a serious threat to the fishing community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also said that the Indian High Commissioner has been informed, and a request has been made at the government level to carry out a fair and transparent investigation. The minister added that the Fisheries Ministry will continue to protect the fishing community and provide all necessary support and assistance to the affected fishermen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Response from the Multi-Day Vessel Owners&#8217; Association<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, we contacted Ruwan Fernando, Secretary of the Multi-Day Vessel Owners&#8217; Association, regarding the attack on Sri Lankan fishermen in international waters. The secretary said that the fishermen were attacked while returning to Sri Lanka from the Arabian Sea after completing their fishing activities. He added that a group dressed in black stopped the fishing boats and attacked the fishermen very brutally. According to the fishermen, the attackers were from India, the secretary said. All the injured fishermen who received treatment have now been discharged from hospitals. The secretary also said that the association has requested the authorities to conduct a proper investigation into the incident.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>India rejects the allegations.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Allegations that the Indian Navy or Coast Guard attacked Sri Lankan fishermen have been rejected by India. The High Commission of India\u2019s office in Colombo issued a statement confirming that Indian officials were not behind the attack on the Sri Lankan fishermen. The spokesperson stated that, upon notification, the Navy intervened and brought the affected fishermen ashore for medical treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He further explained that the Navy provides technical assistance for investigations of any emergencies, accidents, or illnesses that occur at sea. He also confirmed that whenever such incidents are reported, the Navy conducts its own investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accordingly, it is evident that some Sri Lankan fishermen, while on their way out for fishing and returning, were subjected to an attack. The fishermen claim that the attackers were from India.
