As a new variant of this Covid-19 virus named as \u2018Omicron\u2019 becomes a global concern, new conspiracy theories have started surfacing on social media. The latest one is an image of the comic strip showing the superhero the Phantom instructing other characters to cover up their mouths with a mask is widely circulating on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can see in the viral image, the Phantom says \u201cTie as I do. This will protect you from the&nbsp;<strong>&#8216;China Virus&#8217;&nbsp;<\/strong>in the valley.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This image is being shared as a proof of a conspiracy theory about Covid-19 pandemic being pre-planned. Users claim that the comic strip was published in 1957 indicating that the virus was planned way before it\u2019s time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Former Secretary to the Government of India, Anil Swarup has tweeted this image mentioning the following:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am told this was published in 1957, the &#8220;China Virus&#8221; continues to torment us even today. Precautions also valid. Don&#8217;t give up the mask as yet.\u201d (sic)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I am told this was published in 1957&#8230;&#8230;the &quot;China Virus&quot; continues to torment us even today. His tweet mentions, \u201cHow easily misinformation spreads. Today someone in one of my WA groups posted a clip from a old Indrajal comics and a mention about &#8216;China Virus&#8217;, in 1957! A quick research revealed that the clip was from a 1979 story &#8216;Valley of no return&#8217; and no mention about any China Virus!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can see the original image posted by the Twitter user where the word \u201cChina virus\u201d is not visible. They tweet also mentions that the original image is from a comic named &#8216;Valley of no return&#8217; published in 1979.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img_6213609ad6d7c.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, we started searching about the comic strip named <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipcomics.net\/classics-index\/strips.php?list=D067\">&#8216;Valley of no return&#8217;<\/a>, we found that this comic strip ran in newspapers from July 1957 to September 1957. The strip was written by Lee Falk and was illustrated by Wilson McCoy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img_6213609b988e3.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, taking a cue from the above information we ran another keyword search on Google, which led us to an auction website named \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/comics.ha.com\/itm\/original-comic-art\/comic-strip-art\/wilson-mccoy-the-phantom-daily-comic-strip-original-art-group-of-3-king-features-syndicate-\/a\/121727-11109.s\">Heritage Auctions\u201d<\/a> where we can see the original image of the comic strip. We can see the original image mentions \u201cTie it on as I do. This will protect you from the&nbsp;<strong>\u2018sleep death\u2019&nbsp;<\/strong>in the valley.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img_6213609c50e3f.jpg\" alt=\"https:\/\/dyn1.heritagestatic.com\/lf?set=path%5B1%2F5%2F5%2F9%2F6%2F15596170%5D%2Csizedata%5B850x600%5D&amp;call=url%5Bfile%3Aproduct.chain%5D\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Below you can see a comparison image between the viral image and the original image from the Phantom comics published in 1957.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img_6213609d0e6bb.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conclusion-<\/strong>Fact Crescendo found the viral image on social media to be digitally altered.
