Viral posts on social media are claiming that the International Cricket Council (ICC) has banned the Sri Lanka Cricket Team from international cricket for one year due to political reasons. These claims have spread widely, causing confusion and growing concern among the public.

However, our investigation confirms that the International Cricket Council (ICC) has not banned the Sri Lanka cricket team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A series of posts went viral with the claim that the \u201cICC banned Sri Lanka from INTL Cricket for one year due to political reasons”<\/em> on the 17th of April 2026 (17.04.2026), as seen in the screenshot below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fact Check  <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

First, we searched the ICC\u2019s official website and social media pages to see whether they had issued any official statement regarding Sri Lanka Cricket’s ban. If there were any changes regarding a ban or suspension, the ICC website would definitely have announced them, as has been the case in the past. However, we did not find any such announcement. We also checked international and local media and found no news reports related to this claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sri Lanka is listed as an ICC full member on their official website.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

According to the ICC, there are currently 12 Full Member countries and 96 Associate Member countries where cricket is firmly established, and the ICC continues to list Sri Lanka as a full member under Asia, as seen here<\/a> on its official website, alongside Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have requested clarification from the ICC media team on any active sanctions or restrictions affecting Sri Lanka and whether its upcoming international assignments will proceed without issues. We intend to update the article with their confirmation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sri Lanka Cricket Board Media Spokesman <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

To obtain further clarification about any current ban or suspension, we directly contacted the Sri Lanka Cricket Board\u2019s media spokesperson and asked about the claim. He denied the viral post and stated that he had not received any such notification from the ICC. The upcoming tours of the cricket team are in place as per the schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As per the official Sri Lanka Cricket website, the men’s cricket team is expected to take part in its next assignment in June\/July 2026 against the West Indies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SLC was suspended in late 2023 but lasted only 79 days<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

So, we conducted a Google keyword search and found that the ICC Board had, in fact, suspended Sri Lanka Cricket<\/a>\u2019s membership back on November 10, 2023, citing a \u201cserious breach\u201d of its obligations as a member, specifically the requirement that member boards must manage their affairs autonomously and without government interference. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ICC’s formal statement read: “Sri Lanka Cricket is in serious breach of its obligations as a member, in particular the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and ensure that there is no government interference in the governance, regulation, and administration of cricket in Sri Lanka.” <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So the suspension under Article 2.4(D) of the ICC Constitution was an open-ended decision tied to one specific condition: the suspension would stay in place as long as the government-appointed interim committee was in charge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, the suspension was lifted on January 28, 2024, about 79 days after it was imposed, after Sri Lanka\u2019s new sports minister at that time, Harin Fernando, assured that political interference<\/a> would stop and the board\u2019s independence would be restored.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sri Lanka was not prevented from playing cricket during the above-mentioned suspension either. The ICC’s suspension specifically targeted SLC’s governance and membership rights, not the national team’s ability to participate in bilateral matches. We found that the Sri Lanka cricket team played against Zimbabwe during the period when the Sri Lanka Cricket Board was under suspension. link<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conclusion: <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

From our investigation, we can confirm that the claim that the ICC banned Sri Lanka from international cricket for one year is false. While Sri Lanka Cricket faced a real ICC suspension in November 2023, the ICC resolved it within 79 days, and the spokesperson for SLC confirms that there isn’t any active ban on Sri Lanka Cricket currently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
