The footage looked convincing enough at first glance. But the video contained no date, no location identification, and no stated purpose. We investigated what the video actually shows and whether any such import has taken place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Social Media Posts :<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe frameBorder='0' width='640' height='360' webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen src=\"https:\/\/www.awesomescreenshot.com\/embed?id=54169704&#038;shareKey=8af9067913bad8ad08eb279b71d1b298\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/share\/r\/1EKszNT8Ej\/\">Facebook<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same video circulated further as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/r\/1EJTF6YJsC\/\">Facebook<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DaQUHTMEt78\/?igsh=cmt2bWRqOHFkZWM4\">Instagram<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several social media users shared positive reactions to the clip, interpreting it as real:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"724\" height=\"645\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19604\" srcset=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-4.png 724w, https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-4-300x267.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 724px) 100vw, 724px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The video included no date, occasion, vehicle identification, or stated purpose for the import. We set out to verify whether this was a genuine event, and whether any such project actually exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fact-Check :<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Locomotive in the Video Bears the Russian Railways Emblem and a Russian Serial Number<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On close inspection, the locomotive in the video carries the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/CextA\">official emblem of Russian Railways<\/a> clearly visible on its front hood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"638\" height=\"453\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-5.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19605\" srcset=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-5.png 638w, https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-5-300x213.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 638px) 100vw, 638px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its serial number, SAT210-580, identifies it as a <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:EP2K-500.jpg\">Russian-made EP2K-class electric mainline passenger locomotive<\/a>, built by Kolomna Locomotive Works. It is a 3 kV DC engine designed specifically for the broad-gauge (1,520mm) rail networks of Russia and the surrounding region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sri Lanka Has No Infrastructure for This Type of Locomotive<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sri Lanka&#8217;s railway network currently runs entirely on diesel-powered locomotives, the M-class and S-class. <a href=\"https:\/\/economynext.com\/sri-lanka-approves-railway-electrification-project-for-high-density-corridors-276238\/\">None of the overhead electrification infrastructure required for 3 kV DC electric passenger trains is active anywhere in the country<\/a>. A Russian broad-gauge electric locomotive would have no compatible track to run on in Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>No Such Import Has Taken Place<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the video implied this locomotive had recently been unloaded at a local port, we investigated. Such an import would represent a fundamental shift for Sri Lanka&#8217;s rail system and would have been reported by mainstream media and confirmed by official sources. Our investigation found no report or record of any such import.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Visual Analysis: The Video Contains Clear AI-Generation Artefacts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A close examination of the circulating video reveals multiple unnatural characteristics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2022 Crowd proximity: <\/strong>it is unusual for people to stand this close during the unloading of a massive locomotive at a port.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2022 Shape instability: <\/strong>certain vehicles&#8217; fronts and wheel shapes shift subtly and abruptly as the video plays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2022 Background distortion: <\/strong>cranes, containers, and buildings show non-straight geometric lines that warp or blend unnaturally as the video progresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2022 Object disappearance: <\/strong>frame by frame, objects including vehicle rear sections and background figures vanish or morph without explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given these technical and visual anomalies, it was clear this footage was not filmed at a real port. We ran the video through several AI-detection tools, which confirmed it was AI-generated, not genuine footage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"681\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-6.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19606\" srcset=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-6.png 681w, https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-6-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-6-400x600.png 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 681px) 100vw, 681px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ministry of Transport Confirms: No Import Has Taken Place<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We contacted the Media Secretary and Coordinating Secretary of Deputy Minister of Transport Prasanna Gunasena. He confirmed that the viral video is not authentic and that no such import of an electric locomotive has taken place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also asked whether any import was planned. Ministry of Transport stated that no electric locomotive import would occur this year. Plans are currently being drawn up, track-laying work would begin in 2027, and only once that is complete can locomotive imports be considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Sri Lanka\u2013Russia Railway MoU: What Was Actually Signed<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sri Lanka has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Russia to modernize its railway service. Aimed at elevating technical standards and expanding investment cooperation, this agreement between the Sri Lankan government and Russia was signed on 19 May 2026, on the sidelines of the 17th International Economic Forum held in Kazan, Russia. Minister of Transport Bimal Rathnayake signed on behalf of Sri Lanka, with Russian Deputy Minister of Transport Dmitry Zverev signing for Russia. The goal is to transform the currently diesel-powered local rail service into a state-of-the-art Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) system. This plan, submitted by the Ministry of Transport, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.lk\/images\/pdf\/2026\/06\/23\/Cabinet_Decisions_on_22.06.2026_English.pdf\">recently received official Cabinet approval<\/a>. The locomotive visible in the video is a Russian EP2K-class engine designed for Russian broad-gauge rail networks, for which Sri Lanka has no compatible infrastructure.
