It spread quickly, and left drivers genuinely unsure whether they still had to pay. We checked where the clip really came from. Here is what we found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Social Media Posts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The video and posts told motorists that, because parking-fee collection in Colombo had been suspended with immediate effect, they should not pay for parking anywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video\">\n  <div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n    <iframe \n      src=\"https:\/\/www.awesomescreenshot.com\/embed?id=54605719&#038;shareKey=be92147ae9b7b4031b3203dedcdfaade\" \n      width=\"100%\" \n      height=\"450\" \n      frameborder=\"0\" \n      allowfullscreen>\n    <\/iframe>\n  <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using frames from this video, Facebook posts circulated with captions like \u201cEven if it&#8217;s only for a few days, it&#8217;s a relief for people,\u201d framing it as a recent decision, as seen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sunimaldeshappriya.perera\/posts\/pfbid02M8vth2uY24y3wuayAuhQ2eyhzvX9SJSNaye4DtQ2G9hR1CnAHWtYP2rqmdMGrsEWl\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"831\" height=\"645\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-62.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-62.png 831w, https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-62-300x233.png 300w, https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-62-768x596.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 831px) 100vw, 831px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Checking mainstream media reports and the Colombo Municipal Council itself for any recent suspension of parking-fee collection, we found no such report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tracing the Ada Derana video used in the post, we found it was actually published several months earlier, on March 18, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=476&#038;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Freel%2F1663258941775030%2F&#038;show_text=true&#038;width=476&#038;t=0\" width=\"476\" height=\"591\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowFullScreen=\"true\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=1663258941775030\">Facebook<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This confirms the clip is not recent but <strong>an old video from March 18, 2026, being re-shared.<\/strong> At that time, the Colombo Municipal Council had temporarily suspended parking fees to ease the severe traffic congestion caused by long queues at fuel stations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the government&#8217;s QR-code system and vehicle-number rationing eased the fuel queues and congestion, that temporary relief which lasted only 5 days, was withdrawn from <strong>6:00 AM on March 23, 2026<\/strong>. From that date, fee collection resumed as normal with the approval of the Council&#8217;s Finance Committee, as reported at the time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.divaina.lk\/main-news\/68443\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itnnews.lk\/2026\/03\/23\/785021\/\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lankadeepa.lk\/news\/%E0%B6%9A%E0%B7%85%E0%B6%B9-%E0%B6%B1%E0%B6%B8%E0%B6%BD-%E0%B7%80%E0%B7%84%E0%B6%B1-%E0%B6%B1%E0%B7%80%E0%B6%AD%E0%B7%80%E0%B6%B1%E0%B6%B1-%E0%B6%AF%E0%B6%B1-%E0%B6%AD%E0%B6%BB%E0%B6%AB%E0%B6%BA-%E0%B6%85%E0%B6%AD%E0%B7%84%E0%B6%A7%E0%B7%80%E0%B6%BA\/101-689928\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Colombo Municipal Council<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We contacted Colombo Mayor Vraie Cally Balthazaar, who stressed that no parking-fee suspension is currently in effect within the city and that all drivers must pay parking fees as usual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She confirmed the circulating video is an old clip and urged social media users not to share such misleading content, since it risks misinforming the public. The Colombo Municipal Council also published a Facebook post about the misleading video shown below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fpermalink.php%3Fstory_fbid%3Dpfbid0DxJ2m5VVis24zuknTpEFc87YCT1SfxgFGTidysD6X1udbhX5N8MoaRAxnVJcRNPql%26id%3D100092730128935&#038;show_text=true&#038;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"736\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Current Parking Fees in Colombo City<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the revised parking-fee structure <a href=\"https:\/\/adaderana.lk\/news\/105807\">implemented by the Colombo Municipal Council from February 2025<\/a>, the first 10 minutes of parking in any public area are free. Fees apply only after that grace period, based on vehicle type, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombo.mc.gov.lk\/postimages\/files\/ME-ME-ML-14-2022_rotatedd-3-40.pdf\">as follows<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Motorcycles: Rs. 20 per hour.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Three-wheelers: Rs. 40 per hour.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cars and dual-purpose vehicles, including vans: Rs. 70 per hour.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Buses, coaches and lorries: Rs. 100 per hour.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These charges apply daily from 6:00 AM to midnight, with no fees on Poya days or special government holidays. Colombo Mayor Vraie Cally Balthazaar has confirmed the Council has taken no such decision recently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The clip is in fact an old video showing a temporary arrangement from several months ago, now being recirculated. Parking fees in Colombo continue to be charged as usual. We urge the public not to share or believe such misleading, fabricated posts.
