The claim spread fast because it flattered a nation still climbing out of the worst economic crisis in its history. We investigated. Here is what we found.

In short: the post conflated several unrelated international indices and dressed up an achievement won within a narrow group of countries (emerging and developing economies) as an overall global ranking. While Sri Lanka’s recent gains in debt transparency, earned while emerging from a debt crisis, are real and noteworthy, the ‘4th in the world’ framing is not.

Social Media Posts

The images used to portray Sri Lanka standing shoulder to shoulder with the world’s leading economies, through a ranking chart, are shown below.

Facebook | Archived Link

Further posts pushing similar narratives, claimed that Sri Lanka was 4th fastest developing economy, even endorsed by the IMF.

We put the claim to the test.

Fact Check

Our initial check made one thing clear: no official international report or organisation has ranked Sri Lanka as fourth fastest developing nation, alongside the United States, China, and Canada on any index, as the post claims. Behind the viral graphic, though, sits a real event that has simply been placed in the wrong frame. Here is what actually happened.

1. The Real Source: The Institute of International Finance (IIF) Report

The Institute of International Finance (IIF) recently confirmed, in an official report, that Sri Lanka ranked fourth among the countries that improved fastest in investor relations and debt transparency in 2026. But even on that index the countries ahead of Sri Lanka were Vietnam, Belize, and Mozambique, not the United States, China, and Canada.

The assessment covered investor relations and debt transparency across 57 emerging and developing economies for 2026. The full report is available here.

According to the IIF’s ‘Investor Relations and Debt Transparency Report 2026: The Transparency Dividend,’ Sri Lanka’s progress across the key indicators was as follows.

1.1 Investor Relations Country Score

On this index of 57 emerging and developing economies, Sri Lanka took 4th place among the fastest-improving countries year on year. It scored 43.67 out of 50, a gain of 6.3 points on its 2025 score of 37.33.

Rank

Country

Score Increase

1

Vietnam

+10.9

2

Belize

+8.2

3

Mozambique

+6.4

4

Sri Lanka

+6.3

5

El Salvador

+2.7

6

Bahrain

+2.5

7

Bolivia

+2.4

8

Cameroon

+2.4

9

Ethiopia

+2.3

10

Ecuador

+1.6

Crucially, this fourth place came specifically under the ‘Change in IR Country Scores, 2026-2025’ indicator. The accurate description is therefore ‘fourth among developing economies for improvement in investor relations and debt transparency’, by no means a global fourth place. In plain terms, Sri Lanka was the fourth fastest-improving country on this measure.

Debt Transparency Score

Sri Lanka also climbed to 5th on the debt transparency disclosure measure, among the 57 emerging markets, a striking jump. In this dedicated sub-index, Sri Lanka scored 11.25 out of a maximum 13 points, rising 14 places from 19th in 2025 to 5th in 2026.

Rank

Country

Score Increase

1

Bahrain

+2.8

2

Azerbaijan

+1.8

3

El Salvador

+1.5

4

Mongolia

+1.1

5

Sri Lanka

+1.0

6

Cameroon

+0.6

7

Belize

+0.6

8

Bolivia

+0.5

9

Jamaica

+0.5

10

Romania

+0.3

ESG Data and Policy Dissemination Score

This sub-index measures how well a country makes environmental, social, and governance (ESG) policy information available to international investors. Sri Lanka scored 3.25 out of 4.0 and ranked among the year’s strongest improvers, alongside Thailand, El Salvador, and Nigeria, placing 5th on this measure.

Rank

Country

Score Increase

1

Thailand

+1.1

2

Ethiopia

+0.8

3

El Salvador

+0.8

4

Belize

+0.8

5

Sri Lanka

+0.8

6

Nigeria

+0.6

7

Romania

+0.6

8

Mongolia

+0.6

9

Jamaica

+0.5

10

Vietnam

+0.5

The IIF report attributes Sri Lanka’s progress mainly to the formal launch of an Investor Relations Programme under the Finance Ministry’s Public Debt Management Office (PDMO) in December 2024. That has allowed more transparent, credible engagement with international creditors and investors. As highlighted earlier, the IIF measure covers only 57 emerging and developing economies. The United States, Canada, Japan, Finland, Norway, and Switzerland, all named in the post, are advanced markets and are simply not on the list of 57.

China does appear in some IIF reports as an emerging market, but it has not recently faced a debt crisis or run a special IMF debt-restructuring programme as Sri Lanka has, so it had no reason to surge up the ‘fastest improvers’ category. The conclusion is plain: on the IIF’s recent assessment, Sri Lanka reached fourth and fifth place alongside developing nations such as Vietnam, Belize, and Mozambique, not the United States, Japan, or Canada.

The Remitly Index Is a Different Ranking Too

Digital money-transfer firm Remitly’s 2026 Immigration Index ranked Sri Lanka 4th among the best countries for families to relocate to, with Spain, China, and the United States taking the top three. This is yet another index, and it does not match the one in the viral post. See the report here.

The Remitly index rates 82 countries across 34 factors. Sri Lanka’s strong showing in the family category was driven mainly by its education system and low childcare costs. (It had, in fact, taken first place in this same category the previous year.)

How These Countries Actually Rank on Major Global Indices

Checking the countries named in the post against the widely recognised international development indices tells a vastly different story.

Country

GDP (IMF 2026)

HDI (UNDP 2026)

Happiness (WHR 2026)

Sri Lanka

81st

89th

134th

USA

1st

17th

23rd

China

2nd

78th

65th

Japan

4th

23rd

61st

Canada

11th

16th

25th

Norway

31st

2nd (tied with Switzerland)

6th

Switzerland

20th

2nd (tied with Norway)

10th

Finland

50th

12th

1st

(GDP: nominal, IMF projections; HDI: latest UNDP Human Development Report; Happiness: World Happiness Report 2026.)

Sri Lanka’s Real Economic Backdrop

Sri Lanka’s IIF result is best understood not as a standalone event but as one part of the broader recovery under way since the 2022 default. In 2022 inflation neared 70% and the country defaulted on its foreign debt; conditions have stabilised markedly since. Growth was around 5% in 2025, with 4-5% projected for 2026, inflation now sits in single digits (about 7%), and official reserves had strengthened to roughly US$7 billion by the end of March 2026.

A key pillar of this stability has been IMF’s Extended Fund Facility. Worth about SDR 2.3 billion (roughly US$3 billion), its fifth and sixth reviews were completed in May 2026. Creditors also approved a US$12.55 billion restructuring of international sovereign bonds in December 2024, putting the debt burden on a more sustainable path; the debt-to-GDP ratio is projected to fall to about 95% in 2026, with a long-term target of 87% by 2030.

The payoff is visible in credit ratings. After the restructuring, Fitch upgraded Sri Lanka to ‘CCC+’, Moody’s to ‘Caa1’, and S&P lifted it out of ‘selective default’ to ‘CCC+/C’. Transparent, timely debt disclosure has directly helped rebuild investor confidence and stabilise these ratings.

The wider context sharpens the point. Global debt hit a record US$348 trillion in 2026, and emerging-economy sovereign borrowing alone topped US$4 trillion in 2025. Past debt crises have often been made worse by critical information staying hidden until too late, which makes debt transparency an urgent need today. Against that backdrop, Sri Lanka’s progress on transparency while recovering from a crisis genuinely stands out. But that is a story of recovery, not of Sri Lanka becoming the ‘world’s fourth-largest economy’.

Where Sri Lanka Actually Stands on Growth

On the real GDP growth forecasts in the IMF’s World Economic Outlook (April 2026), the fastest-growing economies of 2026 are mostly small oil and commodity exporters or countries emerging from crises: South Sudan (27.2%), Guyana (14.4%), and Libya (13.7%) lead. Among major economies, India grows fastest at around 6.5%, cementing its role as South Asia’s engine.

Sri Lanka does not appear on that list. The IMF projects its real GDP growth, slowing from 5% in 2025 to about 3% (3.1%) in 2026, which the IMF describes as a return to its long-term post-crisis trend. At roughly 3%, Sri Lanka is neither the world’s nor South Asia’s fastest-growing economy.

Also read: Is Sri Lanka South Asia’s fastest-growing economy? No official international institution has published any such global ranking. What actually happened is that a genuine, fact-based Sri Lankan achievement was placed in the wrong frame.

The real achievement: according to the Institute of International Finance’s 2026 report, Sri Lanka ranked fourth among the fastest-improving countries in investor relations (scoring 43.67/50) and fifth in debt transparency. But that assessment covers only 57 emerging and developing economies; advanced markets such as the United States and Canada are not even on the list.

More importantly, this is a genuinely notable step for a country raising transparency standards while climbing out of a debt crisis, one milestone within a broader recovery: inflation that soared after the 2022 default has fallen to single digits, growth has resumed, and Fitch, Moody’s, and S&P have all upgraded their ratings. In a world carrying record debt, Sri Lanka’s progress on transparency deserves recognition. Inflating it into the claim that ‘we are now the world’s fourth-largest economy’ does its real value a disservice.
