They found it among the bats in South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They published it on the preprint repository <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biorxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2022.01.24.477490v1.full\">BioRxiv<\/a> on 25 January 2022. It is a yet-to-be peer-reviewed study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is NeoCov?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NeoCov is a misnomer because it has not yet been proven as a variant of SARs-Cov-2, <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/life-style\/health-fitness\/health-news\/wuhan-scientists-detect-neocov-coronavirus-among-bats-in-south-africa-does-it-pose-any-threat-to-humans-who-sheds-light\/photostory\/89199728.cms?picid=89199739\">reports<\/a> Times of India. NeoCov is closely related to the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). MERS is a viral disease that was first identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-background has-pale-cyan-blue-background-color has-pale-cyan-blue-color is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ALSO READ: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/english.factcrescendo.com\/2022\/01\/15\/no-europe-has-not-relaxed-mask-and-vaccine-mandate\/\"><strong>Has Europe Proposed To Relax Mask And Vaccine Mandate?<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-background has-pale-cyan-blue-background-color has-pale-cyan-blue-color is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Covid-19 vs MERS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), which we are suffering right now, is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But according to <a href=\"https:\/\/theprint.in\/science\/neo-cov-is-a-no-cov-how-10-yr-old-virus-is-causing-needless-alarm-what-study-actually-says\/816105\/\">the Print<\/a>, NeoCov is genetically 85 percent similar to the MERS-CoV virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are types of coronaviruses that can infect people are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>MERS-CoV (the beta coronavirus that causes Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or MERS)<\/li><li>SARS-CoV (the beta coronavirus that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS)<\/li><li>SARS-CoV-2 (the novel coronavirus that causes coronavirus disease 2019, or COVID-19)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Hence, it is not accurate to say NeoCov is a new variant like Omicron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How dangerous is NeoCov?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are no known human cases of NeoCoV. NeoCov <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/science\/neocov-chinese-scientists-warn-of-new-kind-of-coronavirus-from-bats-2735155\">does not infect humans<\/a> in its current form but further mutations may make it potentially harmful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our study demonstrates the first case of ACE2 usage in MERS-related viruses, shedding light on a potential bio-safety threat of the human emergence of an ACE2 using &#8220;MERS-CoV-2&#8243; with both high fatality and transmission rate,&#8221; researchers said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers further noted that infection with NeoCov could not be cross-neutralized by antibodies targeting SARS-CoV-2 or MERS-CoV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-background has-pale-cyan-blue-background-color has-pale-cyan-blue-color is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ALSO READ: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/english.factcrescendo.com\/2022\/01\/14\/viral-statement-on-covid-19-vaccines-falsely-attributed-to-bill-gates\/\"><strong>Bill Gates did not \u201cconfess\u201d that Covid-19 vaccines should be withdrawn immediately<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-background has-pale-cyan-blue-background-color has-pale-cyan-blue-color is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What does WHO say?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>World Health Organization is aware of the detection of NeoCov. WHO said \u201cthe virus requires further study to ascertain if it poses a risk to humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Whether the virus detected in the study will pose a risk for humans will require further study. Coronaviruses are often found in animals, including in bats which have been identified as a natural reservoir of many of these viruses,&#8221; WHO officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/world-news\/neocov-coronavirus-what-who-said-on-new-virus-discovered-by-chinese-scientists-2735647\">was quoted<\/a> as saying by TASS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What are Variants?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the WHO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/diseases\/novel-coronavirus-2019\/question-and-answers-hub\/q-a-detail\/coronavirus-disease-%28covid-19%29-variants-of-sars-cov-2\">website<\/a>, viruses can change and evolve as they spread between people over time. Further study is required to determine its true harmfulness to human health.
