In this backdrop we found a Facebook post being shared widely, stating that SLPP Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam paid a deposit for presidential election on behalf of Shiranthi Rajapaksa (wife of opposition leader and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa) as reported by Ada Derana.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Facebook page called \u201cLella Hutan\u201d made the below remarks claiming that \u201c<strong>\u0dbb\u0dcf\u0da2\u0db4\u0d9a\u0dca\u0dc2 \u0d9a\u0dd2\u0dba\u0dbd\u0dcf \u0db1\u0db8 \u0dad\u0dd2\u0db6\u0dca\u0db6\u0da7 \u0dc4\u0dd0\u0db8 \u0d91\u0d9a\u0dcf\u0da7\u0db8 \u0da2\u0db1\u0dcf\u0db0\u0dd2\u0db4\u0dad\u0dd2\u0d9a\u0db8\u0dca \u0d9a\u0dbb\u0db1\u0dca\u0db1 \u0db6\u0dd1. \u0da1\u0db1\u0dca\u0daf\u0dd9 \u0daf\u0dd9\u0db1\u0dca\u0db1\u0dd9 \u0d9c\u0ddd\u0da8\u0da7. \u0d91\u0da0\u0dca\u0da0\u0dbb\u0dba\u0dd2<\/strong>&nbsp;??\u201d which translates to \u201cAnyone cannot become a president just by having the name of Rajapaksa. The official statement (Media Release 01) released by the Election Commission with regards to Presidential Election 2019 states as below with regard receiving of nomination and deposit of securities.\u201cAll the candidates should have made the prescribed deposit before nomination. A sum of Rs. 50,000 is required to be deposited for a candidate nominated by a recognized political party and a sum of Rs. 75,000 for an independent candidate. Deposits are accepted by the Chief Financial Officer of the Election Commission, Sarana Mawatha, Rajagiriya during the period from 18<sup>th<\/sup> September 2019 to 12<sup>th<\/sup> noon of 6<sup>th<\/sup> October 2019, the day prior to the date of nominations, on working days, from 8.30 am to 4.15 pm and from 8.30 am to 12 noon on 6<sup>th<\/sup> October 2019\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img_6213653f2a63f.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<table class=\"wp-block-table\"><tbody><tr><td><a href=\"https:\/\/elections.gov.lk\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-release\/MR_01_E.pdf\">Election Commission Press Release<\/a><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the claims had stated that the message was sent from Ada Derana, we checked the SMS alert feed sent from Ada Derana and found only the below messages on 20<sup>th<\/sup> of September, related to this incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img_621365410ac67.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We verified the same with Ada Derana Facebook page and Digital and confirmed with Ada Derana that there had not been a news update published as per the above claim in any of their platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img_621365429cb96.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<iframe width=\"654\" height=\"490\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DWKAJN8FJQM\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<table class=\"wp-block-table\"><tbody><tr><td><a href=\"http:\/\/www.adaderana.lk\/news_intensedebate.php?nid=57850\">Ada Derana Online<\/a><\/td><td><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/gota-pres-election-deposit\">Archived Video<\/a><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table>\n\n\n\n<p>Cash deposit of Gotabaya Rajapaksa for presidential election was covered in most of the main-stream media as below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<table class=\"wp-block-table\"><tbody><tr><td><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymirror.lk\/breaking_news\/SLPP-makes-cash-deposit-for-Gota\/108-174830\">Daily Mirror Online<\/a><\/td><td><a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/ovZFd\">Archived Link<\/a><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><a href=\"https:\/\/ceylontoday.lk\/news-more\/7351\">Ceylon Today Online<\/a><\/td><td><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/screenshot-ceylontoday.lk-2019.09.23-08_47_00\">Archived Link<\/a><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailynews.lk\/2019\/09\/21\/local\/197602\/ec-invites-public-complaints-violations\">Daily News Online<\/a><\/td><td><a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/NXjkK\">Archived Link<\/a><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conclusion:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From our investigations, it is clear that the claim \u201cSLPP Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam paid a deposit on behalf of Shiranthi Rajapaksa\u201d is completely false.
