Website named Newshub.lk carried a post in their web as well as their Facebook page in Sinhala language under the title \u201c\u0d86\u0dc3\u0dd2\u0dba\u0dcf\u0dc0\u0dda \u0db4\u0dca\u200d\u0dbb\u0db8\u0dd4\u0d9b\u0dad\u0db8 \u0d9c\u0dd4\u0dc0\u0db1\u0dca \u0dc3\u0dda\u0dc0\u0dba \u0db6\u0dc0\u0da7 \u0dc1\u0dca\u200d\u0dbb\u0dd3 \u0dbd\u0db1\u0dca\u0d9a\u0db1\u0dca \u0db4\u0dd2\u0daf\u0dd4\u0db8\u0dca \u0dbd\u0db6\u0dba\u0dd2\u201d translated to English it stated \u201cSri Lankan becomes the premier airline in Asia\u201d. Few other websites like newsi.lk<\/a> also carried this news with the same headline and since we felt there is a mismatch with the news been reported to some other websites we decided to do a fact check on this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We did a google search for World Travel Awards and came across their winners for 2019 via official website. The award ceremony was held at Phu Quoc, Vietnam and given below is a snapshot of the results page for awards winners for Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we checked each award in detail it was clear that SriLankan was awarded Asia\u2019s leading airline to the Indian Ocean for 2019. Furthermore, SriLankan airlines was indeed one of the nominees for Asia\u2019s leading airline for 2019 award which was ultimately bagged by Singapore Airlines. From our investigation it is clear that the awards were given for the Asian region, hence some of the publishers had carried the title \u201cSriLankan becomes premier airline in Asia\u201d. SriLankan was in fact the leading airlines to Indian Ocean and Singapore airlines was awarded as Asia\u2019s leading airline for 2019 at World Travel Awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
