Citizenship is not renounced \u2013 confirms US Department of Justice official\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img_621364d1d7264.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<table class=\"wp-block-table\"><tbody><tr><td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/lankaenews\/photos\/a.219828384749001\/2777451958986618\/?type=3&amp;theater\"><strong>Facebook Link<\/strong><\/a><\/td><td><a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/M8QBm\"><strong>Archived Link<\/strong><\/a><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table>\n\n\n\n<p>Number of Facebook users opined that the letter is fake and is a last resort in the mudslinging campaign of the opposition; hence, we decided to investigate the letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fact Check <\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we inspected the document allegedly issued by the US Department of Justice, we found some nuances in the language used in this letter. Some questionable points are highlighted below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Use of two different formats for writing date (November 11. 2019 and 11 November 2019)<\/li><li>Use of Gotabaya Rajapaksa (\u201cRAJAPAKSA\u201d)&nbsp;<\/li><li>Use of \u201cLaw and Policy Section\u201d at the top and \u201cOffice of Law and Policy\u201d at the bottom<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img_621364d324358.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We noticed that in all the documents produced by SLPP presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa regarding to US Citizenship his name has been spelt as Nandasena Gotabaya Rajapaksa. We decided to inspect how a US government agency had mentioned Gotabaya Rajapaksa in legal matter by taking a look at the motions that had been filed and the arguments of the case \u201cAhimsa Wickrematunga Vs Gotabaya Rajapaksa\u201d. We can see in the document given below, the name is mentioned as \u201cNandasena Gotabaya Rajapaksa\u201d in all the legal documents issued by US District Court for Central District of California<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img_621364d3ac9a4.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<table class=\"wp-block-table\"><tbody><tr><td><a href=\"https:\/\/cja.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/70.-Order-Granting-MTD.10.21.2019.pdf\">U.S. District Court for Central District of California<\/a><\/td><td><a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/D3Czt\">Archived Link<\/a><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, in order to verify the designated signatory party of this document we checked the profile of \u201cChristopher Hardee\u201d the person who appears to have signed the document and found that he is indeed working as the \u201cChief Counsel for Policy\u201d at the National Security Division in US Justice Department as per his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/chris-hardee-3a103731\">LinkedIn Profile<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However we were doubtful as to \u201cChief-Policy\u201d being mentioned under his name hence deicide to inspect how his designation is given in the Justice Department website and found out it as \u201cChief Counsel for Policy\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img_621364d443998.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<table class=\"wp-block-table\"><tbody><tr><td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/iso\/opa\/resources\/422201412716042240387.pdf\"><strong>Justice Department Web<\/strong><\/a><\/td><td><a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/6E2h2\"><strong>Archived Link<\/strong><\/a><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, we had noticed that few Facebook users had commented that November 11<sup>th<\/sup> is a holiday in the United States. We contacted the US Embassy in Colombo and learnt that November 11<sup>th 2019<\/sup> (Last Monday) was a holiday for the Embassy. We checked the Official website of US Government to verify whether November 11<sup>th<\/sup> is listed as a holiday and learnt that in 2019 Federal Holidays November 11<sup>th<\/sup> (Veterans\u2019 Day) is listed as a holiday as shown below. US Government official Office of Personnel Management has also mentioned that November 11, 2019 as a holiday. Both are shown below<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img_621364d520114.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<table class=\"wp-block-table\"><tbody><tr><td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usa.gov\/life-in-the-us#item-37617\">2019 Federal Holidays usa.gov<\/a><\/td><td><a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/fSJ7y\">Archived link<\/a><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img_621364d61b105.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<table class=\"wp-block-table\"><tbody><tr><td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opm.gov\/policy-data-oversight\/pay-leave\/federal-holidays\/#url=2019\">2019 Federal Holidays opm.gov<\/a><\/td><td><a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/DvHmX\">Archived link<\/a><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table>\n\n\n\n<p>We checked the US Justice Department holidays and confirmed that November 11 was listed in the official website as a holiday as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img_621364d7d451a.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<table class=\"wp-block-table\"><tbody><tr><td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-wdwi\/office-hours\">Justice.gov web<\/a><\/td><td><a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/0sfCd\">Archived Link<\/a><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table>\n\n\n\n<p>On inspecting the official Twitter account of US Justice Department, we observed that there were daily Tweets from the Justice Department and there were no tweets between 9<sup>th<\/sup> November to 12<sup>th<\/sup> November . Missing tweets on these two days is due to holidays on 10<sup>th<\/sup> November and 11<sup>th<\/sup> November owing to Sunday and Veteran\u2019s day respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img_621364d8d5c15.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<table class=\"wp-block-table\"><tbody><tr><td>Justice Department Twitter<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table>\n\n\n\n<p>We tried to locate letters issued by official US Department of Justice and noticed that usually the date format used in these letters were as such \u201c[Month] [Date in Number], [Year in Number]&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img_621364d9af0a3.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<table class=\"wp-block-table\"><tbody><tr><td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.governmentattic.org\/12docs\/OLCstyleManula_2013.pdf\">Letter 1<\/a><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img_621364db5fcb4.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<table class=\"wp-block-table\"><tbody><tr><td> <a href=\"https:\/\/fas.org\/irp\/eprint\/ag-cyber.pdf\">Letter 2<\/a> <\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table>\n\n\n\n<p>With SLPP presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa\u2019s US citizenship renunciation becoming a hot topic during past few days U.S. Embassy&#8217;s Public Affairs Officer, Ms. Nancy VanHorn had clarified few days back that citizenship renunciation is quite a length process.
