This is our investigation of viral misinformation on social media about XBB \u2013 a sub-variant of Omicron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Social Media Posts&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The text message with the headline &#8220;News from Singapore&#8221; is spread on social with a description of the XBB sub-variant of Omicron. While listing some of the symptoms of this variant, the long narration also claimed that Covid19-Omicron XBB had become highly infectious, highly toxic and deadly. The entire message is seen below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>TAKE CARE AND WEAR A PROTECTIVE MASK IN PUBLIC PLACES!&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>News from Singapore!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Please be sure to wear a mask as the new COVID-Omicron XB variant Coronavirus is different, lethal, and not easy to detect: &#8211;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>The symptoms of the new COVID-Omicron XBB virus are as follows: &#8211;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>No coughing.<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;2. No fever.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>There will be many: &#8211;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;3. Neck pain.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;6. Upper back pain.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;7. Pneumonia.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;8. Usually no appetite.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Of course, COVID-Omicron XBB is five times more toxic than the Delta variant and has a higher mortality rate than Delta.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>It takes less time for the condition to reach extreme severity, sometimes with no obvious symptoms.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Let&#8217;s be more careful!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>This virus strain is not present in the nasopharyngeal area, and it directly affects the lungs, the &#8220;window,&#8221; in a relatively short time.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Several patients diagnosed with Covid Omicron XBB were eventually classified as having no fever and no pain, but X-rays showed mild chest pneumonia.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Nasal swab tests are usually negative for COVID-Omicron XBB, and false negative cases for nasopharyngeal tests are increasing.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>This means that the virus can spread in the community and infect the lungs directly, resulting in Viral pneumonia, which in turn causes acute respiratory stress.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>This explains why Covid-Omicron XBB has become highly infectious, highly toxic and deadly.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Please note that avoid crowded places, even in open areas, to maintain a distance of 1.5 meters, wear a double mask, wear a suitable mask, and wash your hands frequently when you are asymptomatic (no coughing or sneezing).<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>This Covid Omicron * &#8220;WAVE&#8221; * is more deadly than the first wave of COVID-19. These strains are dominant in different regions and are closely monitored by health authorities worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>XBB.1.16 (Arcturus):<\/strong> Noted by Thailand&#8217;s Department of Disease Control for causing outbreaks across multiple countries. Shares common symptoms with Omicron variants but uniquely causes conjunctivitis (red eyes and discharge).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>XEC:<\/strong> A highly transmissible Omicron subvariant causing typical COVID symptoms but without loss of smell\/taste, making it similar to flu symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LP.8.1:<\/strong> Prevalent in the US and spreading globally. Causes typical symptoms and remains well-controlled by existing vaccines and immunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>JN.1:<\/strong> Dominant in parts of Asia, accounting for over two-thirds of cases in some regions. Highly transmissible with immunity-evading mutations, but not more severe than earlier variants. Causes typical COVID symptoms including possible loss of taste\/smell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Severe Are These New Variants?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Symptoms:<\/strong> The latest variants generally cause typical Omicron symptoms like sore throat, cough, and fatigue. Arcturus notably causes conjunctivitis, while XEC&#8217;s symptoms are more flu-like without loss of smell\/taste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Severity &amp; Transmissibility:<\/strong> While highly transmissible, these variants typically cause mild to moderate illness, especially in vaccinated individuals. Severe cases remain rare, mostly affecting older adults and those with underlying conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is XBB&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Technically, XBB is not a direct variant of Covid 19, and it&#8217;s a subvariant of Covid 19 variant- Omicron. However, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) definition, XBB is a recombinant of BA.2.10.1 and BA.2.75 sub-variants of Omicron. More details about it can be read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/activities\/tracking-SARS-CoV-2-variants\">here<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/rXi6z\">Archived<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And there is a controversy about whether XBB subvariants can be detected from general RAT and PCR tests. While some experts in the field state that it can be determined from tests like the RAT as seen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/can-rapid-covid-tests-detect-new-variants-6824009\">here<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20221105074710\/https:\/www.verywellhealth.com\/can-rapid-covid-tests-detect-new-variants-6824009\">Archived<\/a>, few are skeptical of these results. A Group of experts from the Health Department of the Philippines warn that it&#8217;s challenging to identify XBB from usual tests. However, while fever and cold can also be seen, the symptoms are generally mild, according to the Indonesian government&#8217;s spokeswoman of Covid 19 pandemic. And the severity of the infection is low. But the transmission rate of the virus is high. There is, however, early evidence pointing at a higher reinfection risk than other circulating Omicron sub-lineages. Cases of reinfection were primarily limited to those with initial infection in the pre-Omicron period. They claim these misleading claims made without scientific proof could lead to panic and confusion among the public and advised not to share such posts with unverified facts. <a href=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/2ak34udm\">Archived<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, MOH Malaysia is very appreciative and grateful to the people who still wear face masks when going out of the house to take care of their health &amp; it states that vaccinations still provide reasonable protection against COVID-19 and urge to get the booster dose for those who qualify especially for high-risk groups, as seen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/100064560379224\/posts\/499429815552360\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can XBB skip the nasal cavity and attack the lungs?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;The SARS-CoV-2 virus is immobile and travels through droplets and aerosols that we breathe in. It is not a homing missile that searches for a particular target. As the air we breathe through the nasopharynx before it reaches the lungs, that is where most of the virus ends up, and that is why we swab the nasopharynx to detect COVID-19.&#8221;,<\/em> says medical doctor Adrian Wong in his writings.
