Diabetes is one of the most common non-communicable diseases, which can be found worldwide\u2014millions of people suffer from it. People who are in various stages of life have to face the consequences related to diabetes despite the fact in which age they are. While researchers and lab experiments are going on, there have been many social media posts and new drugs\/treatment methods related to diabetes. However, the content of some social media posts is false and misleading. Here is our investigation associated with such misleading social media posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Posts trying to convince that a Philippine student invented a new diabetes treatment, and the student received the highest medical award from the Philippine government. And those posts also say that news was covered by CNN- Philippines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We decided to do a fact-check on this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fact Check<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

First, we went to a web link associated with the post. However, the association did not provide any details about diabetes treatments. It only talks about some eco-tourism-related things in the Philippines. The article about eco tourism can be read here<\/a>. Archived<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then we checked about such news on CNN- Philippine. However, we could not find any such published by CNN- Philippines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After that, we checked whether the recognized media of the Philippines did a fact check or article related to this. Then, we found that Rappler- a digital media agency founded by Nobel Laureate, Maria Ress, did a fact-check on this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fake Association to Dra. Minguita Padilla<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

We also noticed that some of the social media posts had claimed Dra. Minguita Padilla to this so-called new wonder drug for Diabetes cure. However, in December 2022, Dra. Minguita Padilla has refuted these claims stating that she is an endocrinologist and did NOT have any association or endorsement with such a project, and her name and photo were misused in making these claims, as seen below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diabetes<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

According to the WHO, Diabetes is a chronic, metabolic disease characterized by elevated blood glucose levels (or blood sugar), leading over time to severe damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most common is type 2 diabetes, usually in adults, which occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn’t make enough insulin. In the past three decades, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes has risen dramatically in countries of all income levels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Type 1 diabetes, once known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, is a chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For people living with diabetes, access to affordable treatment, including insulin, is critical to their survival. However, according to WHO, there are ways to treat and prevent diabetes. Our investigation found that the viral social media posts about a Philipino student receiving the highest medical award for inventing a diabetic treatment were false.
