However, despite being constantly warned, people still fall prey to these frequent scams disguised alongside attractive offers. This is our investigation regarding such a scam targeting the Commercial Bank of Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Social Media Posts<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Viral messages, especially on messaging platforms and to a lesser extent on Facebook, claimed that Commercial Bank, on behalf of its 53<sup>rd<\/sup> Anniversary, had launched a National Government Subsidy program. The users stood a chance to win rewards by filling out a questionnaire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"504\" height=\"902\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image-61.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5877\" srcset=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image-61.png 504w, https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image-61-168x300.png 168w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/paulina.evarts\/posts\/5194957057273527\">Facebook<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.awesomescreenshot.com\/image\/37419949?key=9b832525c3935e49c3dbb2690dd62c0f\">| Archived<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We did a fact-check as the general public is keen on the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fact Check<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>First, we tried to find related social forwards which claim to give cash gifts to commemorate the Commercial Bank\u2019s 53<sup>rd<\/sup> anniversary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, we found several links that direct users to the same website. Those links are mainly shared via WhatsApp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"799\" height=\"574\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image-60.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5876\" srcset=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image-60.png 799w, https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image-60-300x216.png 300w, https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image-60-768x552.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When social media users click these links, they go through several steps. Finally, there is a step to share the link with several other users via social media, a ploy used by similar fraudsters and scammers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image-10.jpeg\" alt=\"\"><\/td><td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image-59.png\" alt=\"\"><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image-58.png\" alt=\"\"><\/td><td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image-9.jpeg\" alt=\"\"><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image-57.png\" alt=\"\"><\/td><td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image-56.png\" alt=\"\"><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And Commercial Bank of Sri Lanka warned its customers not to become victims of such fraud. They emphasized that if the bank wanted to inform customers about cash gifts, they do it using their official communication handles and not from fraudulent websites.
