Many had blamed Chathura for making such a move, citing that he was a loyal supporter of the unsuccessful previous Rajapaksa-led government and, therefore, he too should be responsible for the current economic crisis of Sri Lanka. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, has Chathura Alwis really left Sri Lanka for good? Let&#8217;s look at the viral claims first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Social Media Posts :<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A photo of journalist Chathura Alwis alongside a Sri Lanka businessman from Canada, Riyaz Rouf, was shared widely, claiming to be the scene of Chathura being welcomed at the Toronto airport in Canada. It was also stated that Chathura Alwis and his family had migrated to Canada, as seen below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5970\" width=\"393\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image-3.png 509w, https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image-3-164x300.png 164w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 393px) 100vw, 393px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/permalink.php?story_fbid=pfbid0CYErWfkTNsNYgAZjdPX6DZHL7YvP5UbCQnHrQUYgPhaisCPhLyge4jQiv1bEK4xLl&amp;id=746980053\">Facebook<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.awesomescreenshot.com\/image\/37570578?key=fb274d8d82effb68225a163cd48aff83\">Archived Link<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/permalink.php?story_fbid=pfbid0CYErWfkTNsNYgAZjdPX6DZHL7YvP5UbCQnHrQUYgPhaisCPhLyge4jQiv1bEK4xLl&amp;id=746980053\">Here<\/a> is a report published about this news on a Sri Lankan website. <a href=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/2po45pa5\">Archived<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, some pointed out that Chathura left for Canada amidst the turmoil in Sri Lanka to seek political asylum. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below is a Tweet with the same message about Chathura migrating to Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chaturaalwis?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@chaturaalwis<\/a> Are you left?<br><br>&quot;Derena TV, Chathura De Alwis migrating to Canada with his family, arrived at Toronto Pierson airport and welcomed by Realtor Riyaz Rouf.&quot; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lGnqBbzQHh\">pic.twitter.com\/lGnqBbzQHh<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Anfas Latheef (@AnfasLatheef) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AnfasLatheef\/status\/1630790420258226178?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 1, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/vu77n\">Archived<\/a>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fact Check :<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We investigated social media using the keywords&#8217; Chathura Alwis&#8217; and &#8216;Canada&#8217; to discover the veracity of these viral claims. We found a post on the &#8216;Travel with Chathura&#8217; Facebook page with the caption &#8216;Travel with Chathura Canada Tour.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The post thanked Anushka and the team from CameraLk, who had been providing camera equipment for the &#8216;Travel with Chathura&#8217; programs aired on the Derana channel since 2014, and was again appreciating the help given by providing the equipment for the tour of Canada as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Ftravelwithchaturaofficial%2Fposts%2Fpfbid02FW8rTEwX5moxzuXs8VR56Qz8JL7PTDeqVQ5oHAw55yroKB8fo5uzZkGAqSCoLqanl&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"724\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/2mmomcsx\">Archived Link<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We contacted the Derana Media Network to confirm the facts about Chathura&#8217;s trip to Canada. They clarified that Chathura went to Canada to record a few video programs for &#8216;Travel with Chathura&#8217; and &#8216;Talk with Chathura&#8217; hosted by Chathura and that he would return to Sri Lanka after completing this work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also inquired about this photo from Chathura Alwis. He clarified that the visit to Canada was to record a few programs for his channel and would return soon after the completion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, the official Facebook account of Chathura De Alwis shows the instances of filming done for these programs from Canada, as seen <a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/chaturaAalwis\/posts\/731521938529556\">here<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/2glt2h49\">Archived Link<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also contacted <a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/riyaz.rauf.1\">Mr. Riyaz Rauf,<\/a> an influential Sri Lankan businessman residing in Canada, who appears in the viral photo with Chathura Alwis. Mr. Riyaz explained that he was very familiar with many of the media personalities in Sri Lanka, including Chatura. As a result, and due to this acquaintance, he went to the Toronto airport to welcome Chathura Alwis, solely at his discretion.
