The new and reconstructed roads have helped improve livelihoods and lower the cost and time of transporting goods to several parts of the country.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this context, we noticed an old photo posted on Facebook getting new attention. Initially posted by a page called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Matiyaofficialone\"><strong>Matiya<\/strong><\/a>, on 4th October 2017, the image is of a pristine road and it is claimed to be of the Puttalam-Anuradhapura Highway. Receiving nearly 7000 likes and over 28,000 shares to date, the post is accompanied with the text \u201c\u0db8\u0dda \u0dc0\u0dd9\u0db1 \u0dbb\u0da7\u0d9a \u0db1\u0dd9\u0db8\u0dd9\u0dba\u0dd2 \u0db8\u0da0\u0d82 \u0d85\u0db4\u0dda \u0dbb\u0da7\u0dda \u0db4\u0dd4\u0dad\u0dca\u0dad\u0dbd\u0db8 \u0d85\u0db1\u0dd4\u0dbb\u0dcf\u0db0\u0db4\u0dd4\u0dbb \u0db4\u0dca\u200d\u0dbb\u0db0\u0dcf\u0db1 \u0db8\u0dbb\u0dca\u0d9c\u0dba.. \u0dbd\u0dc3\u0dca\u0dc3\u0db1\u0dba\u0dd2 \u0db1\u0dda\u0daf..<strong> <\/strong><strong>\u2764\ufe0f<\/strong>\u201d translating to English as \u201c<strong>This is not from another country dude, this is our country\u2019s Puttalam-Anuradhapura main road. Isn\u2019t it beautiful?\u201d <\/strong>The post can be seen below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Matiyaofficialone\/photos\/a.1583641425284529\/1858945654420770\"><strong>LINK<\/strong><\/a><\/td><td><a href=\"http:\/\/archive.today\/vDiVt\"><strong>ARCHIVE LINK<\/strong><\/a><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"866\" height=\"526\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4022\" srcset=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-4.png 866w, https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-4-300x182.png 300w, https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-4-768x466.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 866px) 100vw, 866px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A keyword search also revealed the post was shared recently causing renewed attention for the image as can be seen below<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"551\" height=\"509\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-5.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4023\" srcset=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-5.png 551w, https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-5-300x277.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 551px) 100vw, 551px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The old post seems to have also received new comments as can be seen in the comments section:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"416\" height=\"486\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-6.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-6.png 416w, https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-6-257x300.png 257w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 416px) 100vw, 416px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Considering the generic aspects of the image that could imply that it was taken anywhere in the world it was necessary to do a fact check to ascertain its authenticity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FACT CHECK<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We began our search with a simple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?hl=en-LK&amp;sxsrf=ALeKk036R6mhv3F9x5kU7FaZtwNV8XBz5g:1589184711051&amp;source=lnms&amp;q=road+in+kangaroo+island+australia&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjNx7yxrqvpAhVV7XMBHcUYBacQ_AUoAHoECAkQAg&amp;biw=1366&amp;bih=608\"><strong>Google Reverse Image Search<\/strong><\/a> which indicated that the road was in fact an image from a road on Kangaroo Island, Adelaide, Australia. Our search results can be seen below with a series of similar images of the same highway, each associating the image with the highway in South Australia:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"632\" height=\"454\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-7.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4025\" srcset=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-7.png 632w, https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-7-300x216.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 632px) 100vw, 632px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking specifically at stock images from sites like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twenty20.com\/photos\/d6e8d731-5391-4ab8-807e-6585ad2033ba\"><strong>Twenty20.com<\/strong><\/a><strong>, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agefotostock.com\/age\/en\/Stock-Images\/Rights-Managed\/BWI-BLW042204\"><strong>ageofstock.com<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/imgur.com\/TlBaGxo\">imgur.com<\/a> , <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alamy.com\/the-road-to-cape-du-couedic-flinders-chase-national-park-kangaroo-image69686384.html\">alamy.com<\/a> indicated the image location as \u201cThe road to Cape du Couedic, Flinders Chase National Park, Kangaroo Island, South Australia\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-imgur wp-block-embed-imgur\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"imgur-embed-pub\" lang=\"en\" data-id=\"TlBaGxo\"><a href=\"https:\/\/imgur.com\/TlBaGxo\">View post on imgur.com<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"\/\/s.imgur.com\/min\/embed.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Further, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-7859125\/Before-photo-reveals-devastating-damage-wreaked-bushfires-Kangaroo-Island.html\"><strong>Daily Mail article published on 7th January 2020<\/strong><\/a> indicated that the pristine road and surroundings were no more, as a result of the devastating forest fires that rocked the country for several months. Several before and after photos, show the same road which is now in a terrible condition as can be seen from one of the photographs in the Daily Mail article as can be seen below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"706\" height=\"504\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-8.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4026\" srcset=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-8.png 706w, https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-8-300x214.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 706px) 100vw, 706px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Daily Mail also published a before and after composite image of the road as can be seen below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"621\" height=\"534\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-9.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4027\" srcset=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-9.png 621w, https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-9-300x258.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 621px) 100vw, 621px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, we looked for images of the actual Puttalam- Anuradhapura road in Sri Lanka. It was discovered that the actual highway does not end in Anuradhapura but continues on to Trincomalee and hence the AA012 is actually known as the Puttalam &#8211; Trincomalee Road according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rda.gov.lk\/source\/rda_roads.htm\"><strong>Road Development Authority<\/strong><\/a> in Sri Lanka. Some images of the highway from our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=puttalam+anuradhapura+trincolmalee+road&amp;tbm=isch&amp;ved=2ahUKEwi42pDFsqvpAhUzBbcAHYOVD1YQ2-cCegQIABAA&amp;oq=puttalam+anuradhapura+trincolmalee+road&amp;gs_lcp=CgNpbWcQA1DoOFiUW2D2XGgDcAB4AIAB9QKIAa4XkgEHMC44LjUuMZgBAKABAaoBC2d3cy13aXotaW1n&amp;sclient=img&amp;ei=Ig25XrhBs4rctQ-Dq76wBQ&amp;bih=608&amp;biw=1366\"><strong>Google Search<\/strong><\/a> can be seen below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"991\" height=\"418\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-10.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4028\" srcset=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-10.png 991w, https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-10-300x127.png 300w, https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-10-768x324.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 991px) 100vw, 991px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CONCLUSION<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on our investigation which indicates that the image was taken in South Australia and not Sri Lanka, hence we declare the viral post is false and miscaptioned.
