World Health Organization (WHO) asked China to share more information about the situation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the precise nature of the illness remains uncertain, initial indications point towards a probable resurgence of common respiratory pathogens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indian Union Health Ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/news\/india\/monitoring-respiratory-illness-outbreak-in-china-but-risks-low-for-india-govt-11700831925255.html\">said<\/a> it is closely observing the recent increase in respiratory illnesses among children in northern China. No unusual pathogens or unexpected clinical presentations have not been detected in India. ProMED is a surveillance system that conducts global reporting of infectious disease outbreaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 23 November, WHO held a teleconference with Chinese health authorities from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the Beijing Children\u2019s Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reasons behind outbreak<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Chinese authorities, the rise in cases is linked to the easing of COVID-19 restrictions and the onset of colder weather.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The increase is also associated with the presence of familiar pathogens like influenza, Mycoplasma pneumonia, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since May, there has been an increase in cases of Mycoplasma pneumonia, and starting from October, there has been a rise in illnesses caused by viruses like RSV, adenovirus, and influenza, WHO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/disease-outbreak-news\/item\/2023-DON494\">said<\/a> in a statement.\u00a0 Mycoplasma pneumonia and RSV are known to impact children more than adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Since mid-October 2023, WHO has been monitoring data from Chinese surveillance systems that have been showing an increase in respiratory illness in children in northern China.<br><br>Today, WHO held a teleconference with Chinese health authorities in which they provided requested data\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lkO22QrelQ\">pic.twitter.com\/lkO22QrelQ<\/a><\/p>&mdash; World Health Organization (WHO) (@WHO) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WHO\/status\/1727777166874616019?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 23, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is the Risk?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Chinese authorities informed WHO that they have not found any new or strange pathogens causing illnesses, and they haven&#8217;t noticed any unusual ways people are getting sick. More people are getting respiratory (breathing) problems due to multiple known pathogens.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to WHO, Mycoplasma pneumonia is a common respiratory pathogen and a common cause of pediatric pneumonia, and it is readily treated with antibiotics.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Al Jazeera <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/11\/23\/what-is-the-mysterious-pneumonia-outbreak-in-china\">reported<\/a> that a major hospital in the city is dealing with around 1,200 patients entering their emergency room daily. The number of people getting sick with respiratory problems is expected to increase during winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are the symptoms?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>According to ProMED, the main symptom in children seems to be a fever with no coughing. But many kids are reportedly developing something called pulmonary nodules, which are small growths in the lungs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pulmonary nodules are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2404643-pneumonia-in-china-everything-we-know-so-far-about-mystery-illness\/\">typically a sign<\/a> of bacterial rather than viral infection and could result from people developing a bacterial infection after having the flu virus.
