Ever since these horrifying scenes of the police officer kneeling on the face of hapless George Floyd started circulating, riots erupted across the USA in the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With media focus shifting from the COVID-19 pandemic to the \u201cBlack Lives Matter\u201d movement, several fake and misleading posts with regards to the Floyd killing had also cropped up across social media. A Sri Lankan FB page titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/newsrilankanews\/\"><strong>New Sri Lanka<\/strong><\/a> posted a lengthy commentary on the situation which included claims that police officers in the US knelt down in apology for the killing. The post which appeared on 2nd June 2020 with a link to a <a href=\"https:\/\/lankaweb.lk\/archives\/9616?fbclid=IwAR2PzxXzmL69_XLMHwVqEd5L2Xs_8E14DFKL2xi1P58Bur-Q_1MJDfp2BtU\"><strong>LankaWeb news story<\/strong><\/a> with similar contents has already been shared several times and can be seen below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<table class=\"wp-block-table\"><tbody><tr><td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/newsrilankanews\/posts\/283005103085565?__tn__=-R\"><strong>LINK<\/strong><\/a><\/td><td><a href=\"http:\/\/archive.today\/dRFdP\"><strong>ARCHIVE LINK<\/strong><\/a><\/td><td><a href=\"https:\/\/lankaweb.lk\/archives\/9616?fbclid=IwAR1VY1rd5cknHcDXXINdvKMv09QibAA5KwpOcECp0a6etRqwwgsofA5UAt4\"><strong>Article Link<\/strong><\/a><\/td><td><a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/wip\/kajLn\"><strong>Archived<\/strong><\/a><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img_621363029a4a6.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The post was accompanied by three images that seem to be related to the current crisis in the US. The collective set of claims and images seemed suspicious and required a fact check to ascertain its authenticity.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FACT CHECK<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We began with a Google Reverse Image search for the 3 images in the viral post. The first image of the police officers kneeling was linked to the core claim that the US police knelt in apology for Floyd\u2019s death. In fact a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/lisettevoytko\/2020\/05\/31\/in-some-cities-police-officers-joined-protesters-marching-against-brutality\/#3ee6089a5edb\"><strong>June 1st Forbes article<\/strong><\/a> carried the same image and stated that officers joined the protest as a sign of solidarity.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The original image, associated with AFP and Getty Images ran with the caption: <strong>Police officers kneel during a rally in Coral Gables, Florida, on Saturday in response to the death of George Floyd. <\/strong>A screenshot of the original Forbes.com article can be seen below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img_62136303cdebd.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img_621363049d3bf.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>CBS News reported the scenes as \u201cPolice officers kneel and march in solidarity with protesters\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FCBSNews%2Fvideos%2F260937318480205%2F&#038;show_text=0&#038;width=476\" width=\"476\" height=\"476\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowTransparency=\"true\" allowFullScreen=\"true\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>However, after the peaceful start to the protest, some protesters had started throwing objects at police officers causing damage to property as well, which had resulted in police responding with tear gas attack near Miami Police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Police using tear gas on protestors near Miami Police Dept <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wsvn?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@wsvn<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/sNCGv40EPt\">pic.twitter.com\/sNCGv40EPt<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Raphael Pires (@RPiresWFTV) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RPiresWFTV\/status\/1266879582403256320?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 30, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The concept of \u201ctaking a knee\u201d was at first more commonly seen in American Football few years ago in a wave of silent protests related to police brutality and racial inequality.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.macmillandictionary.com\/buzzword\/entries\/take-a-knee.html\">Macmillan Definition<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/nll\/?p=34671\">History of the phrase<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img_62136305ce7c6.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Next we next ran a search for the second image which depicted a Black American hugging a White police officer in the midst of the George Floyd protests. Our search indicates that the photograph was indeed captured in Houston and was posted by several people online. One post from Twitter can be seen below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img_62136306e245e.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The third image, which seemed to connect itself to the fact that Officer Derek Chauvin\u2019s wife had filed for divorce soon after George Floyd\u2019s death. While <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2020\/06\/02\/us\/kellie-chauvin-divorce-derek-chauvin-trnd\/index.html\"><strong>CNN<\/strong><\/a> and other major news carriers have also confirmed that the pregnant Kelly Chauvin filed for divorce, the image of the couple accompanying the post does not feature the Chauvins. The image was in fact part of an entirely different news story about a gender reveal party in the UK as carried in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/uk-news\/mums-fury-after-gender-reveal-22104180\"><strong>The Mirror<\/strong><\/a> on 28th May 2020 and has no connection to the current crisis in the US:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img_62136307d90d0.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A further search for actual images of Derek and Kelly Chauvin indicated several images of Kelly Chauvin, including one from an expose published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/world\/1290666\/Derek-Chauvin-wife-divorce-Kellie-Chauvin-Mrs-Minnesota-George-Floyd-death\"><strong>The Express on June 3rd 2020<\/strong><\/a> shown below which has no resemblance to the photo of the woman in the viral post:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/srilanka.factcrescendo.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/img_6213630953d0c.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/conandaily.com\/2019\/06\/30\/kellie-chauvin-biography-13-things-about-usoas-mrs-minnesota-2019\/?fbclid=IwAR29VTExI4I6hvtLqJKpedMSYELfA0neg8_fLRV5_e9_NPWaU1jmvIsfleE\">Kellie Chauvin biography: 13 things about USOA\u2019s Mrs. Minnesota 2019<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CONCLUSION<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on our findings it is apparent that the viral post is misleading by including a farrago of information both true and false. We know that George Floyd\u2019s death caused riots and protests across America. We also know that some police officers joined the protests in solidarity, but they did not apologize. Further, while the Chavin divorce is factual the image related to the claim was false.
