Microscopes are used by scientists, researchers and lab technicians to see the molecular or micro view of different objects, tissues, etc. The molecular view is used by scientists to analyze the basic structures of objects. Molecular views of certain objects are fascinating and unbelievable. Some use this unique nature to share misleading photos as well. This is our investigation related to such a misleading claim.

Social Media Posts

A Facebook page uploaded a photo claiming that the image is a photograph of snow under the microscope. The post had been shared over two hundred times with varying comments and reactions.

Below is a capture of the post with a caption read: “An amazing Photograph of Snow Under the Microscope. Jaw-Dropping glimpse into Nature's hidden perfection.”

Fact Check

We did Google Reverse Image Search and the results yielded the original image by an artist named Rogan Brown titled “Magic Circle Variation 5” as seen here

According to the website of Rogan Brown, the artwork is a paper sculpture. We noticed many similar artworks from Rogan Brown published on his Instagram & Facebook accounts as seen here and here as well.

Speaking to AFP Brown said this artwork is a part of the Human Microbiome Project, launched with the support of the scientists of the UK and added that his artwork Magic Circle Variation 5 is neither a photo of, nor inspired by “snow under a microscope”, as claimed in the misleading posts. Also speaking to USA Today, he said that this artwork which was created by hand, using papers, depicts a colony of bacteria and he wanted to create a positive attitude of people regarding the bacteria. Many details about this can be taken from here. Archived.

Then, we searched about the true nature of bacterial colonies, and photos were taken that depicted the microscopic view of bacterial colonies. Link We were able to detect the similarities of the viral paper art sculpture and the microscopic view of bacterial colonies.

Conclusion:

According to our investigation, we were able to find out that the viral social media post does not depict the microscopic view of snow. The image is paper sculpture artwork done by artists Rogan Brown who specialized in similar artworks and is a depicts a colony of bacteria
