Update: 2023-04-29 17:31 GMT

We often come across many purported home remedies claiming to be cancer treatments. While many such methods can help alleviate some pain and symptoms, resorting to these practices, which are not clinically proven, is not advised since the excessive usage of such home remedies could have adverse effects.

This is our investigation regarding recurring viral posts which state that cancer is cured by eating fruits on an empty stomach and that cancer is formed by drinking cold water.

Social Media Claim:

“Eating Fruit on Empty Stomach

Cancer patients shouldn't die…

This will open your eyes! Read to the end and then send it on to all on your e-list. I just did!

Dr. Stephen Mak treats terminal ill cancer patients by an "un-orthodox" way and many patients recovered.

Before he used solar energy to clear the illnesses of his patients, he believes on natural healing in the body against illnesses.

See his article below.

"It is one of the strategies to heal cancer. As of late, my success rate in curing cancer is about 80%."

"Cancer patients shouldn't die. The cure for cancer is already found - *its in the way we eat fruits."

"It is whether you believe it or not."

"I am sorry for the hundreds of cancer patients who die under the conventional treatments."

EATING FRUIT

We all think eating fruits means just buying fruits, cutting it and just popping it into our mouths.

It's not as easy as you think. It's important to know how and when to eat the fruits.

What is the correct way of eating fruits?

IT MEANS NOT EATING FRUITS AFTER YOUR MEALS!

FRUITS SHOULD BE EATEN ON AN EMPTY STOMACH

If you eat fruits on empty stomach, it will play a major role to detoxify your system, supplying you with a great deal of energy for weight loss and other life activities.”

And these posts further stated that drinking cold water or drinks after a meal causes cancer. Let’s look at the facts.

Fact Check:

As shown in this post, the purported Dr. Stephen Mack did not mention what type of cancer was treated using this method. Therefore, we did a keyword search to find out more about this doctor. Yet, our search yielded no information on such a name or the above-mentioned treatment method.

Dr. Aravinda Dissanayake, a specialist in cancer

Oncological surgeon Dr. Aravinda Dissanayake, a surgeon specializing in cancer, also said there are no scientifically proven studies to prove that eating fruit on an empty stomach could cure cancer.

Director, National Cancer Control Program

Dr. Janaki Vidanapathirana, director of the National Cancer Control Program, said that there is no problem in eating fruits and vegetables on an empty stomach as they are not harmful to the body. Studies show that eating fruits and vegetables can be helpful in preventing diseases like cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity. Still, it cannot be called a cure for cancer.

There are many methods of treatment for cancer. In Western medicine, options include surgical removal of cancer, medicinal courses including chemotherapy, radiation therapy, etc., and specialist doctors deciding which treatment should be resorted to.

Therefore, the National Cancer Control Program director further emphasized that for conditions such as cancer, one should not follow the instructions shown in such posts circulating on social media as cancer cures, seek the advice of cancer-related specialists and decide on the most suitable treatment method at the earliest.

Also some of the posts also mentioned that drinking cold water or drinks after a meal can cause cancer. That information is also false, and so far, no such information has been clinically tested.

Cancer Council Australia

Cancer Council Australia CEO Professor Sanchia Aranda told the AFP news agency on August 7, 2019, that there is no evidence to suggest that drinking cold water causes cancer and that when drinking cold drinks, the liquid warms up body temperature quickly. And that it does not have an adverse effect on the way the body digests food. The article can be found here.

American Cancer Society

And a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society has also stated that, so far, no evidence has been found that drinking cold water causes the development of cancer. The report is here.

Centre for Research in Epidemiology and Population Health at French research institute

Bruno Falissard, director of the Center for Epidemiology and Population Health Research at the French research institute Inserm and professor of public health at the University of Paris Saclay, said water is essential to life. Yet, it does not have the power to cure disease.

"It doesn't matter if the water is hot or cold, it's not healing, it's not harmful, and the body can tolerate water between '0 and 40 degrees'," he told AFP. The report is here.

These claims have been viral worldwide, and some fact checks are here, here, and here.

Conclusion:

Our investigation shows that the claims circulating on social media stating that eating fruit on an empty stomach is a cancer treatment and that drinking cold water or drinks after a meal can cause cancer is false.

The National Cancer Control Program director said that eating fruits is a healthy habit and can help prevent diseases such as cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity. Still, it cannot be called a cure for cancer. Also, clinical trials have not confirmed that drinking cold water causes cancer.
