Recently, there were many talks in the society regarding some questions related to National People’s Power been included in school term test papers. Various posts were circulated regarding this, and so we decided to an investigation regarding this.

A post shared through WhatsApp by many people, questioned an incident of including several questions related to the National People’s Power in a school term test paper. Along with the question paper it was written “No matter the system change, the brainwashing is certain”.

It was shared through Facebook as well.

Social worker Sanka Chandima Abayawardane has also posted a note regarding this in his X account stating that this incident showcases the inability of the Prime Minister and that responsible people should be punished.

Many exchanged opinions that the question paper was related to the National People’s Power and that the education was politicized.

Therefore, we took steps to check the autheticity of this question paper.

On checking the photo of the question paper, we could see that it is a common general test paper given to AL students of the C.W.W. Kannangara Central College, Mathugama in Kaluthara District.

Only the first page of the question paper is been shared through social media. Out of 7 questions in the first page 5 questions are related to the current government and the presidential election.

Specially Mr. Udaya Gamanpila, while holding a press conference on 11th November, strongly condemned this question paper and said that school education has become politicized. He further stated that it is the same school that the team leader of Kaluthara District Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa studied. He questions whether this is the government’s first step to politicize school children.

We first inquired whether such a question paper has actually been given to the high school students by the concerned school and we contacted the principal. We confirmed that it is the front page of the common general test paper given to AL students for their second term examination.

It was a paper prepared by the school itself and the relevant questions of the questioned page of the paper has been constructed according to the current affairs of the country.

Department of Education, Science and Technology

Regarding this, the Secretary of the Department of Education, Science and Technology, Mrs. Thilaka Jayasundara has issued a statment on 11th stating that she instructed the officials to conduct a special investigation into the inclusion of political questions in a school term test examination paper.

Also, the Ministry of Education has informed in its announcemnet that the question paper in question was not prepared by the region or by the Ministry, but rather by the school itself and that there was no state intervention from the Ministry or the educational zone.

Question Preparation Methodology for GCE AL Examination 

On the website of the Examination Department, the structure of the GCE AL common general test paper is given and it states that the whole paper should consist of 50 questions. The questions are multiple choice questions and students have two hours to answer the paper. 

Those 50 questions are made up of,

Current affairs questions from question number 1 to 10, ten questions to test the reasoning skills from question number 11 to 20, fifteen questions to test to problem solving skills from question number 21 to 36 and the rest of the questions upto 50 to test the comprehension and communication skills.

Conclusion:

Accordingly it is clear that this paper was a common general test paper given to AL students of the C.W.W. Kannangara Central College. It is a question paper prepared by that school and it is also clear that the Ministry of Education ot any other regional institution is not responsible with the preparation of the question paper.
