Some images that are being circulated on social media have misleading captions and narratives. This is one of our investigations related to such a viral image that has a misleading caption and story. The social media posts claim that the image depicts an abandoned village in Scotland. However, our investigation proves that the image is depicting a movie set and not an actual Scottish abandoned village.

A Facebook user uploaded a photo in 2022 January with the caption read “An abandoned village in Scotland.” The image has been shared by some social media users along with comments and reactions.

We were able to find out that the image had been shared among social media user for several years.

Here is a post published in 2015 with thousands of shares and likes.

Similar images were seen throughout the Facebook.

Due to the viral nature and curious nature of these posts, we decided to do an investigation about these posts.

Fact Check

We did an Yandex Reverse Image Search and were able to find the similar type image in an Pinterest account of Imgur website which has 4 million followers. Then, we visited the Imgur Website and were able to find a comment located below the viral image.

Then, we investigate behind the contents of this web site and were able to find a Twitter which was published by the account, “Fake History Hunter”.

Then we searched about the film, Hansel and Gretel and German's Babelsberg film park which was used to product film.

We went through Babelsberg official web site and learnt that they were one of the production companies who contributed to product Hansel and Gretel in 2011.It can be reached from here or archived file here.

Meanwhile, a spokeswoman from Babelsberg company told to the AFP that the viral Facebook image is actually depicting the set, built by them in Germany for the film Hansel and Gretel. The AFP report can be reached from here or archived file here.

Conclusion

According to our investigation, we were able to find out that the viral image does not depict the abandoned village in Scotland and it depicts a movie-set built in the Germany for the creation of movie, Hansel and Gretel, which was produced in Germany.
