However, from our Investigation, this statement has proven these claims to be incorrect.

Fact Check

This misconception likely originates from common misunderstandings about food combinations and digestion. While some traditional beliefs claim certain food pairings cause “toxicity” or digestive problems, these claims lack scientific evidence and only spread unnecessary fear.

While persimmons do contain tannins that can affect digestion when eaten unripe or in large quantities, this has nothing to do with eating them alongside bananas or yoghurt. Ripe persimmons are completely safe and nutritious.

Nutritional Value of Persimmons, Bananas, and Yogurt

Persimmons: These fruits come in multiple varieties, primarily from Asia. They are rich in fibre, antioxidants (such as vitamin C), and beta-carotene, aid in digestion, strengthen immunity and promote eye health.

Bananas: A source of potassium, vitamin B6, and natural sugars, helps control blood pressure, supports heart health, and provides sustainable energy

Yoghurt: Contains probiotics, calcium, and protein, supports digestive system health, strengthens bones, and helps repair muscles

Scientific Evidence on Food Pairings

Claims about food combinations causing “poisoning” are pseudoscientific. Modern nutrition science shows no evidence that combining fruits and yoghurt is harmful. Bananas and yoghurt are popular and healthy combinations thanks to their complementary textures and flavours.

For example:

  • Bananas paired with yoghurt make an excellent nutritious snack, especially for athletes, as they provide a balanced mix of protein and carbohydrates.
  • Adding persimmons enhances the nutritional benefits further by providing additional fibre and antioxidants.

Experts Comments

Heng Mei Shan, a nutritionist from Alexandra Hospital, explained that no scientific evidence suggests that eating persimmons followed by yoghurt and bananas would be toxic to the body in any way (Source).

Furthermore, as this claim recently gained attention among Thai users, Thailand’s Department of Health, Ministry of Public Health, has clarified that the statement is false. They explained that no research indicates eating persimmons with yoghurt and bananas can cause poisoning or death.

Persimmons and bananas are rich in fibre, which serves as food for microorganisms (prebiotics). When consumed with yoghurt containing beneficial microorganisms (probiotics), this combination benefits the body.

However, it’s important to note the high sugar content in all three foods. Persimmons and bananas naturally contain high amounts of sugar; most yoghurt products include added sugars. When consumed together, this combination can result in excessive sugar and caloric intake. If the body doesn’t fully metabolise these calories, they may lead to fat accumulation and weight gain. Conclusion

Claims that eating persimmons with bananas and yoghurt is harmful to health are not true. Not only can these foods be safely consumed together, but they also offer complementary nutritional benefits. Rather than following unproven claims, experts advise eating a balanced variety of foods to maintain good health.
