As the election date draws closer, it’s natural to see number of false claims especially on artists and cricketers and is a famous avenue for misinformation. Similarly a post was being shared with Facebook users which claimed that popular actor Kavinga Perera among other artists had tendered his support to NDF presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa. We noticed that a Facebook user called “සඳුන් චන්දිමාල්” was the originator of this post as shown below.

Number of Facebook users including fans of the actor had mentioned this post which had been shared multiple times to be a fake post hence we decided to do a fact-check.
Fact Check
When we inspected the original post we noticed that Facebook user “සඳුන් චන්දිමාල්” had posted on 12th of November as “නිවට නියාලුවන්ගේ දෙපතුල ඉදිරියේ වහල් බවින් දණින් නොවැටි කොදු නාරටිය ශක්තිමත් නිදහස් මත දරණ සැබෑම කලාකරුවෝ සජිත් සමග එක්ව ඉදිරියට ගමනේ 👉” mentioning that number of “true artists” shown in the below post are standing with Sajith Premadasa in this presidential election campaign
Kavinga is one of the nine artists mentioned in the below post

Supporters of Kavinga had mentioned this to be a fake post hence we decided to contact Kavinga Perera. Kavinda ridiculed the above statement and that it had been published completely without his consent and that his political stance is his personal choice and is not known to anyone.
We also learnt that there had been few invites to Kavinga from both main parties to support respective campaigns yet he denied all of them since he would not like to be involved into these affairs. Also Kavinga had clearly mentioned this to both the sides who had invited him for such events.
Shown below is the statement Kavinga Perera had published over his official Instagram account which stated in reply to the original post as “මෙය මා විසින් නිර්මාණය නොකරන ලද දෙයකි. මෙවැනි මඩ ප්රචාර නිර්මාණය කිරීමෙන් වළකින්න. මගේ දේශපාලන මතය මගේ එය දන්නේ මා පමණි. මඩ ප්රචාරය කිරීමෙන් වළකින්න” which translates to “ This is something I didn't create. Avoid creating such mud posts. My political opinion is mine only I know it. Avoid such posts”

Furthermore, we did a Google and Facebook search for last 2 months to find items related to Kavinga Perera and were not able to find any specific ones in which he was offering support to Sajith Premadasa as claimed either.
Conclusion:
Therefore from our investigation it is clear that the statement Kavinga Perera has offered support for Sajith Premadsa is totally false. Actor stated that whom he is going to vote is his personal choice, hence to stop such mud campaigns targeting him to political affiliations.
