The videos went viral on WhatsApp and Twitter also.

Here is another instance when this claim was shared on TikTok as well.

Close inspection of the video suggested that the lip movement of both the journalist and Bill Gates is not exactly in sync with the audio feed heard in the video, and the text narration is running, covering the facial areas also, which again is quite unusual for authenticate videos of this nature. Hence we decided to dig deeper.

Fact Check

Initially, we did a Reverse Image search on the keyframes of the viral video using the Invid - We Verify tool. Then, we found a recent video, published on 31st January, where journalist Sarah Ferguson of ABC News Australia is seen in an interview with Bill Gates. The original video is seen below.

In this video, we note that the journalist is not asking questions like in the viral video, and Bill Gates is also not answering uncomfortably or angrily like in the viral video. And also, at the end of the video Bill Gates concluded the interview amicably; it's not a sudden step like a viral social media video.

The interview starts with a discussion related to climate change and how Australia is faring related to greener technologies like Green Hydrogen. Regarding Covid-19, the journalist asks Gates whether he complained to social media companies over misinformation/disinformation circulating in social media against him regarding covid 19 vaccination, etc. (4:50 min).

Then the ABC journalist asks Gates about his connection with Jeffrey Epstein, who has sex trafficking allegations. (9:50 min). Here Gates says he is regretting about that association with him. In addition, they discussed the probability of Australia producing Green Hydrogen and its export market. So there aren't major controversial points in this interview as implied in the viral video.

Then, the question arises: How can such viral videos with false dialogues be created? The answer is artificial intelligence or AI.

The advancements in newer technologies especially related to Artificial Intelligence (AI), have meant that simulating the voice of anyone has made it easy. An article about it can be read here & here.

Also, one of the fact-checking organizations pointed out that the beginning of the viral video could be traced to a TikTok user who regularly posts about AI and has posted the same viral video under the caption "How dangerous AI can be." However, the post is currently unavailable.

Ironically, towards the end of the interview with the ABC News journalist, the discussion moves towards the use of AI technologies, ChatGPT, etc., and their repercussion, as well as the growing concerns about misinformation!
