The Titanic-bound submersible vessel, ‘Titan’, went missing during a tourist expedition, and all crew members were declared dead after the US Coast Guard officials stated that a ‘catastrophic implosion’ likely caused the explosion.

Several social media posts were viral, targeting OceanGate Expeditions, the company responsible for this voyage. One such post claimed that, soon after the ‘Titan’ tragedy, the OceanGate company had published a job posting for a submersible vessel pilot on their official website.

However, FactCrescendo Team found these claims more accurate as the job posting was not recent but a three-year-old posting.

Social Media Posts

Viral Facebook posts criticised OceanGate expeditions, as seen below, claiming that the company did not waste any time posting an immediate job opening for a Submersible Pilot/Marine Technician.

The listing describes an “immediate opening” for a submersible pilot and marine technician to “manage and operate our fleet of manned submersibles and support vessels.” The job requirements listed are the ability to work in a confined space, experience operating submersible vehicles and a "good sense of humor."

We took steps to investigate the accuracy of these posts.

Fact Check :

The OceanGate's Titan submarine wreckage was discovered on June 22, after which search and rescue operations for the five passengers on board were called off. The passengers are believed to have died after the submarine suffered a "catastrophic implosion".

As stated in the above posts, we tried to check through the website whether the official website of OceanGate has posted a job like this, but we found that the website is no longer live.

But this posting wasn't made after the submersible went missing or anytime recently.

Archived versions of the listing show it was active on the company's employment page as early as June 2020, and remained up days after the Titan submersible went missing.

Next, we looked for the archived versions of the job listings on the website in the Wayback Machine. We came across multiple archived versions of the webpage containing the same job post from August 2020 to May 2023, making it clear that the post was not published after the death of the company CEO and the other passengers.
