A protest turned into communal debate after the death of a teenager in France in a police gunshot. Social media is flooded with many posts and videos in relation to this incident. Fact Crescendo debunked a few such videos which you can read here and here.

Another video is circulating on social media in which a large crowd can be seen gathered on the streets at night with candles. A hymn can also be heard in the background of this video. It was claimed that after the recent incidents in France, people gathered in mass to pray for their country to become Christian again.

However, Fact Crescendo found the claim to be false. This is an old video from 2022 during the Feast of Assumption in France (a festival)

What’s The Claim?

Sharing the video, social media users are claiming that, “Catholics are crying frightened from illegal Muslim immigrants and prayed for France for becoming Christians again!”

This same claim is viral on twitter as well.

Fact Check-

A Google Reverse Image Search on a keyframe of the viral video led us to the same video tweeted by the Sanctuary of Our Lady Lourdes Twitter account on 15 August 2022. It was written, “Beautiful and happy Feast of the Assumption to all. In the union of prayer with all the Catholics of the world. May the Virgin Mary shine in your hearts”

The same video was uploaded on the Sanctuary of Our Lady Lourdes’ official Facebook account.

In another Facebook account it was mentioned that Catholics were singing Ave Maria at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes in France on the eve of the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

From the above facts, it is clear that the viral video has no connection with the recent incidents. This is an old video of a festival in France called the Feast of Assumption.

What is the Feat of Assumption?

According to the Catholic belief system, Mother Mary’s body was assumed into heaven to be reunited with her soul instead of going through the natural process of physical decay upon death. Catholics celebrate this day on 15 August every year, particularly in parts of Europe and South America.

Conclusion:

Fact Crescendo found the claim to be false. The viral video has no connection with recent incidents in France. This is an old video of a Catholic festival called Feast of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
