While the development of artificial intelligence (AI) can be highly beneficial and boost human productivity, AI can sometimes create misunderstandings. This is especially true when social media users fail to mention that a particular artwork was made using AI technologies. In the most recent example, an AI-generated image of Tom Cruise went viral, claiming to be stunt doubles of the famous Hollywood actor.

Social Media Claim

Many Facebook users, including various pages, post pictures with messages claiming to be 'Tom Cruise' and his stunt doubles.

This image went viral and caused confusion among social media users in many parts of the world. However, we found that the claim about these pictures is untrue, and the images were generated using AI.

The Images were generated by Midjourney AI.

We used the Reverse Image Search feature to find the source of the image and found that the images were created by a Facebook user named Ong Hui Woo, who posted his creatives on the Midjourney Official group on June 4th.

Ong Hui Woo posted these pictures with the caption: "Tom Cruise's stunt doubles celebrating at the MI 7 premiere after party." and added that "If you intend to copy and paste these photos on your website or your FB, please at least mention and give credit to the original creator (which is me) or Midjourney, the platform where all these images are created." Ong Hui Woo was continuously getting many queries about the viral image, and he posted another clarification about the set of images, stating that the AI photos were posted on the Midjourney Official FB private group as he used to with all his photos and illustrations. However, unexpectedly people outside the group picked up the images and shared them on their own social media circles without proper attribution, which caused all the confusion. His Facebook post is seen below.

Tom Cruise did not use stunt doubles in his action scenes.

Tom Cruise once talked about his stunt scenes on The Graham Norton Show, saying, "I feel that [when acting] you're bringing everything, you know, physically and emotionally, to a character in a story. I've trained for 30 years doing [stunts], and it allows us to put cameras where you are normally not able to."

Moreover, according to a People's article about various stunts of Tom Cruise, Wade Eastwood, the film's stunt coordinator in Mission Impossible: Fall Out, told the outlet, "It's all Tom flying, 100 per cent of it. There's a lot of jeopardy," read the full article here.

Here is one of the most iconic scenes in the movie of Tom Cruise's solo performance, done without using a stunt double or special effects. Some have commended this scene as the "biggest stunt in cinema history".
