International Social

As the world mourns the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad, India, and stands in solidarity with those affected, social media has also seen a surge in misleading posts related to the incident. Here’s a fact check we conducted on one such false claim.

Social Media Posts :

A video purporting to be a video taken before the final flight of the flight crew that crashed in Ahmedabad, India, has been circulating on social media.

This video was also shared through YouTube.

We did an investigation to check whether the cabin crew in that video was actually the crew who was in the plane at the time of the crash.

Fact Check :

The above-circulated video, which was allegedly taken before the takeoff of the plane, has not been reported by any major Indian media outlet or international media outlet.

Therefore, we submitted this video for a Reverse Image search. Accordingly, we found that this video was posted on the Instagram social media account of the flight attendant (Yashasvi Sharma), who recorded the above video on July 9th.  https://www.instagram.com/p/DKrho6OpwTb/

As the video was published before June 12th, when the AI 171 flight accident occurred, it is clear that this was not a video taken on that day.

She also responded to the video on the 13th, thanking everyone who contacted her to inquire about her well-being after the video was shared on social media, stating them as the cabin crew of the crashed plane. She also mentioned that she is currently in Mumbai.

Furthermore, she had also posted a post on her Instagram Story stating that her video had gone viral on social media as the cabin crew members who died in the plane crash and have requested social media accounts displaying such posts to be reported and removed.

She has also mentioned the inconvenience caused to the family members of the staff on the video because of sharing the video without proper information.

However, since this flight attendant and the other cabin crew staff shown in the video work for Air India, it can be said that the video has been used in a misleading manner.

Indian media reported that ten Air India cabin crew members and two pilots died in the plane crash that occured last Thursday. More information here, here and here.
