The current riots in France continue to spur international headlines, and footage of various civil uprisings spread widely on social media. However, we have found that several unrelated clips are also being claimed as the French unrest.

Recently, a series of such video clips have surfaced, showing wild animals on city streets, accompanied by claims that these animals were released from a zoo in Paris.

Social Media Posts

A TikTok user posted a video featuring a collection of animal clips with the caption:

"Like France, what's going on? Can anyone explain this? #france #paris #riot #pariszoo #parisriot #zoo #animals #escape #viral #dc #foryou #dlaciebie

The video has over 4 million views so far.

We have also encountered other videos on TikTok that claim to show similar incidents of wild animals escaping in Paris and going viral.

However, we found that these animal clips have no relation to the current unrest in Paris and other cities in France.

Fact-Check

We used the Reverse Video Search and Reverse Image Search functionalities to trace the sources of each video in the viral clip, using various keyframes from the videos.

Lions: Upon further investigation, we discovered that the same video had been uploaded onto the YouTube platform for two years. The footage appears to be originated from Knowsley Safari Park in the UK.

The video above clip was viral on Facebook back in October 2020. Here is the footage with over 15 million views.

Zebras and Horses: We found multiple news reports regarding the clip of running zebra and horses on a street at night. The clip depicts an incident of escaped circus animals in Paris in 2020, with zebras and horses breaking free from their circus group.

Rhinoceros: Damien Mander, an environmentalist and activist, posted the video on his Instagram account in 2019. Mander indicated that this was taken near Chitwan National Park in Nepal.

Lion pride at night: Another clip of a lion pride walking around the city was initially shared on Twitter in February. The Twitter user stated that the video was taken in Gujarat, India. Multiple Indian news outlets also reported this video. (Read the news: here, here and here)

Goat: The video of a goat walking on the street was posted on TikTok in January. The uploader included the location as Ales, a city in France. However, the video was published before the riot incidents in France.

Swan: A swan in the clip (labelled as "a goose" in the claiming video) is seen on an urban bridge near Prague's National Theatre, with the nearby Legion Bridge in the background.

Wolf: The video of a dark-coloured four-legged animal was posted by a TikTok user in April with a claim that it was a wolf, and the video was filmed in Marseille, France. BFMTV, a local media in Marseille, reported this incident, and a veterinarian clarified to the outlet that the animal in the video was actually a dog.

Gorillas: Although the clip's origin is unclear, we have determined that it corresponds to the viral Gorilla memes on TikTok that has been circulating since January 2020. As a result, it is also not connected to the recent turmoil in Paris.

Peacock: The video was posted on TikTok in May before the riots started. A TikTok user uploaded the video with a location included as Stains, a commune in the Seine-Saint-Denis department in the northern suburbs of Paris.

Camel and Ox/Bull: A video featuring a camel and a bull or an ox was posted on TikTok in 2022, with the caption translated as "You can only see animals walking around in 93". 93 is another nickname for the Seine-Saint-Denis area, which came from its administrative number.

Moreover, after the clip above spread on social media, a Twitter user inquired about the Parc Zoologique de Paris. The zoo responded on July 3rd, stating, "Don't worry, the animals of @zoodeparis are fine and safe."
