The Propaganda Behind Thalapathy Vijay’s Viral “Instant Justice” Claims

Sri Lankans love their Tamil cinema heroes, and few command a following here quite like Thalapathy Vijay, now the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. So, when posts began landing in Sinhala feeds claiming that Vijay had ordered rapists to be hanged within 24 hours, many shared them with pride, as though a screen hero had stepped off the screen to deliver real justice. The same claim had already flooded Indian social media, mostly in Hindi, before crossing over to us. We investigated. Here is what we found.

Social Media Posts

A series of posts claimed that Thalapathy Vijay had taken a hardline stance against sexual assault and was ensuring that offenders faced punishments such as execution by hanging within 24 hours. They circulated like this:

The same claim also spread in English, insisting that anyone identified as a rapist, whether in Tamil Nadu or anywhere else in India, would be hanged within 24 hours.

We set out to verify the truth behind these claims.

Fact-Check

No Official Record Supports the “24-Hour Execution” Claim

Had Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thalapathy Vijay genuinely imposed such a punishment on sexual offenders, Indian media, international media, and credible official sources would have reported it. Our investigation found no official confirmation, decision, or report of any such move.

Several cases of gang rape involving underage girls were recently reported in Rajasthan, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh. In none of them were the offenders hanged within 24 hours. Indian authorities arrested the accused and dealt with them under the existing law. Related reports are available from NDTV, The Indian Express, and The Hindu.

Setting punishment for rape is also not something a Chief Minister can do. That authority rests with the judiciary. A senior official from the Chief Minister’s office confirmed to India Today that these social-media posts are entirely false.

The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly has passed no law mandating the execution of rapists within 24 hours, and no official statement to that effect exists. The posts also claim the punishment would apply to offenders in Tamil Nadu and other states alike, yet no single state government can enact laws binding on other states.

A Flood of Near-Identical Videos Casting Vijay as a Screen-Style Hero

Many social media creators posted videos under misleading headlines such as “Thalapathy Vijay’s decree: rapists in my state will be hanged or shot dead.” These clips, mostly in Hindi and heaping praise on Vijay, were pushed mainly by influencers based in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra. Another set of creators claimed that Vijay had announced families would no longer have to pay the full bill, and would have it waived entirely, if a patient died at a private hospital. As with the earlier posts, no such decision was ever made.

These videos drew thousands of views and shares. A look at the comments shows that many people took the false claims to be genuinely true.

Against a backdrop of several recent reports of underage girls being gang-raped in India, Indian social-media analysts say these posts and videos appear designed to cast Vijay as a decisive, commanding leader, much like the roles he has played on screen.

In the 2004 film Ghilli, he played a kabaddi player who rescued a woman from gangsters. In the 2019 film Mersal, he played a doctor fighting corruption in healthcare. These are just a few of the many such roles.

Like many Tamil actors with political ambitions, Vijay built a leader-like public image through his cinema roles. Unlike many recent actor-politicians, he turned that image into real success, winning a historic victory at his very first attempt and becoming Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

India Today Fact Check contacted several of these influencers about the misleading content but received no reply. So, it cannot be said for certain who is behind this, or whether it is an organized propaganda campaign. It is equally possible the influencers are simply riding the wave of enthusiasm around Vijay to boost their own engagement. India Today’s report is here, and a related video is here.

The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly has passed no such law, and no official statement supports it. The claims spread widely across India, mostly in Hindi, and have since reached Sri Lankan feeds. They may be an organized effort to cast Vijay as a heroic figure, or simply content creators cashing in on his huge fan base to drive views and engagement. Either way, we rate these posts False.
