Fake Death Claims Targeting Content Creators in Sri Lanka

Every so often, a post races across social media claiming that a well-known content creator has suddenly died, often in a road accident, and dressed up with a real crash photo to look convincing. The latest targets a woman known online as Dileka Weenavi. We investigated. Here is what we found.

A post circulated on social media claiming that Dileka Weenavi, a woman known as a social media content creator, had died in a road accident, as follows:

Fact-Check:

If Dileka Weenavi had truly died in a road accident, her social media accounts would not stay active, and if the incident were real, confirmation would likely appear on those very accounts. We therefore examined her social media presence directly and found her highly active, consistently posting videos and photographs, many of which feature her in person.

Checking the dates of the posts, we found they had been created several days earlier. As of the very time of this fact-check, around 3:30 PM on 21 July 2026, she had in fact released latest content on her social media accounts, as shown below.

Her TikTok account likewise shows active, ongoing content creation, and can be viewed here.

The Accident Photo Is from a Separate 2019 Bus Crash

Some of the posts also carried photographs of a road accident, so we investigated the actual incident it showed. The accident in the photograph occurred on 25 August 2019, when a Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) bus travelling from Colombo to Trincomalee collided head-on with a van on the Dambulla–Habarana road, injuring 22 passengers.

Conclusion:

Our fact-check shows that claims of Dileka Weenavi, a woman known as a social media content creator, dying in a road accident are false. She remains actively engaged in content creation on social media. The photograph presented as showing the accident is, in fact, from an entirely separate road accident that occurred back in 2019.
