When unrest broke out at Mahara Prison on Saturday, 1 August 2026, Sri Lankan feeds filled with a far darker story than the facts: that 81 inmates had been killed, some of them shot execution-style with their hands bound. For a country that remembers the deadly 2020 Mahara riot, the claim landed hard and travelled fast. We investigated. Here is what we found.

No mainstream media outlet or credible official source has reported that 81 inmates died, or that inmates were shot with their hands bound, during the unrest at Mahara Prison on Saturday, 1 August 2026. According to confirmed official sources, the clash left one inmate dead and seven others injured. See coverage from Ada Derana.
The Prisoners’ Rights Protection Committee Made No Such Claim
Had 81 inmates truly died, or had prisoners been shot with their hands bound, bodies such as the Prisoners’ Rights Protection Committee would certainly have spoken out. Our investigation found that neither the committee nor any other organization has claimed this. Senaka Perera, Chairman of the committee, said the main cause of the clash was severe overcrowding: Mahara Prison, built for 991 inmates, currently holds 4,447, and the facilities available to them remain grossly inadequate.
When we contacted him directly, Senaka Perera stated that the committee had never, at any point, claimed that 81 inmates died in the Mahara clash or that inmates were shot with their hands bound. He confirmed that no such thing had occurred.
We also checked claims that MP Ramanathan Archchunan had said 81 unarmed inmates were killed at Mahara and that the Tamil diaspora had been informed. Our investigation found that the MP made no such statement, in Parliament or anywhere else. The date shown on the viral post is 15 July 2026, about two weeks before the incident, yet the post only began circulating on 2 August, the day after the clash. It was designed to mimic the Hiru News format, but no such post exists on any of Hiru News’s official accounts on 15 July or on 1 or 2 August.
The Police Media Division Called the Posts False
When we contacted the Police Media Division, it confirmed that there are no reports of 81 people dying in the Mahara clash and that the viral posts are false. It further stated that claims of inmates being shot with their hands bound are entirely untrue.
The Prisons Media Spokesperson Confirmed the Posts Are Fabricated
Prisons Media Spokesperson Senaka Pallethanna told us that the posts claiming 81 people died in the Mahara clash, and that inmates were shot with their hands bound, are entirely false.
