Even though keen observers may quickly identify manipulated images, average social media users often get deceived by misleading image edits. This investigation focuses on misleading posts circulating on social media related to a currency note image.

Social Media Posts

Recently, social media has been abuzz with posts claiming that the Central Bank of Sri Lanka has issued a new Rs.10,000 currency note adorned with images of a crow and a butterfly on its front side. In addition, an image of the Nuwara Eliya Post Office, which has recently been proposed to be converted to a hotel, and several other symbols have also been added to this purported currency note, as seen below.

While some realized the image to be a satirical edit, many questioned the veracity of this Rs.10,000 note and its resemblance to other existing notes.

Fact Check

Central Bank Rejects the Rumors:

We reached out to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka for verification. According to official sources, there is no truth to the rumors circulating on social media. The Central Bank explicitly stated that a Rs.10,000 note has not been released, and there are no plans to introduce such an initiative in the near future.

Note SeriesCBSL currently has Rs.5000 as the highest-value note in circulation, and the CBSL official also confirmed the same.

Discrepancies in Signatures and Security Features:

Furthermore, the circulating images of the alleged Rs.10,000 note feature a signature that differs from that of the Finance Minister and President of Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickremesinghe. Additionally, the blind-friendly dotted lines on the note are reported to be identical to those found on the Rs.5,000 note.

The number codes used in currency notes in Sri Lanka vary depending on the value of each currency. Usually, 20,50,100,500,1000, and 5000 currency notes are printed with the letters W, V, U, T, S, and R, respectively. Here, the English letter R, used for 5000 currency notes, can also be seen in the Rs.10,000 notes exchanged through social media, raising concerns about the authenticity of the images.

Derivative of Rs.5,000 Note:

Through reverse image searches, it was discovered that the viral image is an altered version of a previously circulated Rs.5,000 note. The original note bears the same serial number of R |2 295015, indicating an apparent attempt to mislead the public with a falsified representation.
