After the assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump, social media circles worldwide, and even in Sir Lanka, have seen a surge in misleading and fabricated content related to the horrifying incident.

Another such claim alleged that the TIME Magazine cover featured Trump with a bandaged ear alongside the headline "Man of the Ear." However, the Factcrescendo investigation found this to be yet another fabrication.

Social Media Posts

Viral posts and meme posts on Facebook, X and other social media platforms, as well as messaging platforms like WhatsApp, shared an image of a purported cover of a TIME Magazine featuring Donald Trump as "Man of the Ear"

This image was viral among WhatsApp users in Sri Lanka as well

Fact Check:

We started our investigation by browsing the recent TIME Magazine covers to verify whether they featured Donald Trump on its cover with a bandaged ear and the headline "Man of the Ear."

We checked TIME Magazine’s website and their official archives for the latest covers. However, the cover shown in the viral claim does not exist.

The latest TIME magazine from 15th July 2024 features Melinda French Gates, not Donald Trump.

The 27th May edition of the magazine did feature Trump, but the image and headline did not match the viral claim, and this predates the assassination attempt on Trump, which happened on 13 July 2024.

Characteristics of a Fake 'TIME' Magazine Cover:

In November 2019, TIME Magazine released a checklist on how to spot a fake cover.

The viral image lacks the white border that is typically present alongside the cover image and only has a red border.

No date or "time.com" is written on the viral image, which are standard elements on authentic TIME covers.

Official Statements and Cover:

On 14 July 2024, TIME Magazine’s official X (formerly Twitter) account posted a cover for their 5 August 2024 edition featuring a photograph of Trump fist-pumping to the crowd moments after the near miss of his assassination attempt. This edition will be titled the "Attack on Trump."

However, the image used for the altered TIME magazine cover is an authentic image of Donald Trump. The image was captured on 15th July, when the Republican presidential candidate, former President Donald Trump, gestured during the Republican National Convention.
