What Was Claimed
A Facebook post, archived here, uploaded on 7th June 2026, described an elder brother who “hacked his younger brother as he screamed” in what was described as an incident in Sri Lanka. Readers were directed at a link in the comments for the full story.

When we followed that linked news report, it described the following: a dispute over a financial transaction in Dikwella, Matara, had escalated into a fatal attack in which a 45-year-old man, reportedly drunk, forced his way into his younger brother’s home with a sharp weapon. An argument broke out, turned physical, and the suspect attacked his brother repeatedly with the sharp weapon, killing him at the scene. The victim was described as a 41-year-old father of three. The suspect, a father of four, was subsequently arrested by police. The report stated that this incident occurred on 6th June 2026.
The same image and corresponding narrative were shared in a number of groups, especially among Tamil communities.
Fact Check
Our first step was to search for any mainstream media coverage of this alleged incident. No reporting from any established Sri Lankan news outlet was found to corroborate the claim.
We did find coverage of a separate murder incident that occurred in the Suduwella area, which falls within the Dikwella Police Division, in March of this year. However, the circulating post specifically stated that the incident took place on 6th June 2026. Our search confirmed that no such incident had been reported around that date in the mainstream media.
And since the image used for the posts were also AI generated, we contacted the local police and journalists to ascertain the veracity of these claims.
Dikwella Police Station
We contacted Dikwella Police directly to ask whether any such murder has recently taken place in the area. The police confirmed that no such incident had occurred in the Dikwella area recently.
Sri Lanka Police Media Division
For further confirmation, we also contacted the Sri Lanka Police Media Division. They confirmed that no murder of this nature had been recorded in Dikwella, and that no such incident had been recorded anywhere within the Matara Police Division either.
Regional Journalists
We also contacted journalists based in the Dikwella and Matara area to inquire whether any such incident has occurred. They confirmed that nothing of the sort had taken place recently. They noted that had such a killing occurred, it would not have gone unreported to them, and that Dikwella Police would have notified them in the ordinary course. No such notification had been received from police. The journalists described the circulating report as entirely fabricated.
