Fact Check :
We first checked whether, as mentioned in the post above, a doctor named Gilbert A. Kwok of ICBS General Hospital had claimed that drinking hot water mixed with pineapple pieces could cure cancer.
Accordingly, a website in Nigeria stated that a doctor named Professor Gilbert A. Kwok Kay from an ICBS hospital had stated the above-mentioned facts. Archived Link
But during our investigation, we couldn’t find any information online, regarding such a hospital or a doctor.
However, as mentioned in the above article, we investigated whether drinking hot water with pineapple pieces can cure cancer.
President of the Indonesian Cancer Foundation
Professor Dr. Aru Wisaksono Sudoyo, chairman of the Indonesian Cancer Foundation told AFP, that although pineapple contains compounds with many healthy benifits, there are no enough evidence to suggest that the fruit is a cancer treatment.
He noted that while consuming pineapple and other healthy fruits and vegetables may help reduce the risk of cancer, they are not equivalent to medical treatments or cures for the disease.
However, bromelain, a group of enzymes found in pineapple, has been investigated in laboratory test-tube studies as a dietary supplement to inhibit the growth of cancer cells, but due to the lack of human trials, it is not possible to conclude that it suppresses the growth of cancer cells.
A cancer specialist in New York
Dr. Raymond Chang, a New York-based cancer specialist and the author of Beyond the Magic Bullet: The Anti-Cancer Cocktail, also points out that, research on the effects of pineapple on cancer cells is based solely on studies conducted in test tubes, so while many natural substances kill cancer cells in a synthetic laboratory environment, they do not work when applied to humans in practice. Director of the National Cancer Control Program of Sri Lanka
We also inquired about this from Specialist Dr. Janaki Vidanapathirana, Director of the National Cancer Control Program of Sri Lanka, and she stated that, eating all healthy fruits, not just pineapple, vegetables, maintaining good health habits, and exercising, not just pineapple, can help reduce the risk of cancer before it develops, but they are not cures for cancer.
Negombo Hospital Anesthetist Namal Wijesinghe also posted a video on his Facebook page regarding this, stating that nutritionists, physiotherapists, and immunology experts in the country have said that the content of this post is false. Dr. Namal Wijesinghe stated that pineapples boost immunity, provide antioxidant protection, and help maintain good health such as skin protection, but that putting pineapple pieces in hot water destroys its properties.
The doctor further stated that such false information should not be shared on social media. You can view the video here.
