With the arrest of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, there have been social media posts claiming that certain government factions, displeased by this, have submitted resignation letters to the President. Let’s look at some of these social media claims.
Social Media Posts:
A user on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) claimed that Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya has reportedly resigned with immediate effect, and the President is delaying accepting these resignations until the hearing of Ranil Wickremesinghe’s on Tuesday(26th), as seen below.
Social media users also claimed that the Western Province Governor, Hanif Yusuf, has also tendered his resignation.
These posts were based on one of the websites, which had reported a news titled “Western Province Governor Hanif Yousuf Tenders Resignation” Archived.
Fact Check:
Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya
No mainstream media has reported that Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya submitted a resignation letter, nor has there been any official announcement from the Prime Minister’s office.
The Prime Minister’s media secretary confirmed that this information is entirely false.

Western Province Governor Hanif Yusuf
Though mainstream media reported on Western Province Governor Hanif Yusuf resigning, our investigation found no news that he resigned or submitted a resignation letter to the President.
We inquired with the Governor’s media team, who confirmed this is false and that he continues to serve as Governor of the Western Province, fully committed to the nation’s rebuilding process.
Statement issued by Western Province Governor mentions that “Claims of me leaving the government are baseless and untrue. I stand firm in my commitment to the President’s vision. I have dedicated myself fully to the mission of rebuilding our nation, without pause or hesitation”
The President’s Media Division
The President’s Media Division also stated that no resignation letter has been submitted to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake by Western Province Governor Hanif Yusuf and that this news is false.
Update from the website that originated the news
In response to reports categorising their news as false, the website, which had initially reported on the matter, issued another update, reaffirming its stance, stating that Governor Hanif Yousuf did indeed submit his resignation, citing personal reasons. The outlet alleges Yousuf plans to relocate and may accept an advisory role on Middle East affairs.
