Scientists in different parts of the world are researching humanoid robots resembling the shape and features of humans, and recent advancements, especially in AI technologies, have significantly aided such developments.

However, a lot of misleading content also gets viral from time to time, claiming to be scientific breakthroughs of human-like robots. This is our investigation into one such video of two dancers falsely claimed to be humanoid robots impersonating humans.

Fact Check

Even though robotics technologies have advanced immensely recently, with humanoid robots designed to read human emotions, we did not come across any news reports of humanoid robots performing such precision dance moves as claimed in the viral video.

We did a reverse image search of the keyframes from the viral clip and came across a YouTube channel called Indian Raga, which contained the same footage, published over five years ago in August 2017.

But this video doesn't have the accompanying background music of the viral video. In fact, the dancers here are performing the Bharatanatyam dance. The name of the dance is Vahana Alarip.

One of the dancers seen here is Sofia Salingaros, a non-Indian Bharatanatyam dancer. In fact, this was her first solo Choreography for Indian Raga, an education startup founded at MIT in Boston, USA. Sophia’s journey with Indian Raga can be seen in this 2019 video, which includes many other dances from the talented artist. The other dancer in the video is Isha Paripudi, also an Indian Raga Fellowship.

Some of the main projects of Indian Raga include Fellowships, Raga Centers, Raga Labs, Concerts, and Productions. According to information provided on Indian Raga's website, “Indian Raga aims to bring Indian classical music and dance into the 21st century, making the art accessible to anyone, anywhere, with online Indian classical singing classes and online Bharatnatyam and Kathak classes designed to provide skill and practice from the masters in a fun and engaging way.”

They further describe themselves in the following way.

“We offer a holistic approach to music and dance, in both classical and contemporary styles. We provide a platform for aspiring artists to explore their talent, with opportunities to focus on presentation and performance, high-quality audio, and video production for digital channels, and learn how to collaborate with fellow artists. We have designed our programs to give you the choice of how to participate from anywhere in the world.”
