Social media posts:

Recently, a post shared on social media including WhatsApp stated that an Indian student at Pondicherry University in India had discovered a home remedy for Covid-19 and that it had been approved by the World Health Organization. He proved that taking a teaspoon of pepper powder with two teaspoon of honey and ginger juice for 5 consecutive days can eliminate the effects of corona by up to 100%. It is said that the whole world has started taking this treatment and will be a joyful experience in 2021.

Fact Check

We forwarded this message to the Sri Lankan delegation of World Health Organization and they confirmed that the World Health Organization has not approved such a home-made medicine and so is a false message.

It is reported that the social media coordinator at Pondicherry University also told the AFP fact-finding team that this was fake.

The Fact of Fiction section of the World Health Organization’s Southeast Aisa region also states that while some spices may have health promoting properties, there is no scietific basis for the claim that a mixture of pepper, honey, and ginger juice provides relief from COVID-19.
