Insight International

The 2026 Assembly Election has brought about a massive shift in the political history of Tamil Nadu. Breaking the political dominance held alternately by the DMK and AIADMK for nearly 60 years, a new party has assumed power. The following is analysis takes a look at the misinformation spread across social media throughout this election period.

Election Results and the New Government

In the election held on April 23, 2026, Tamil Nadu recorded a historic voter turnout of 85.1% , the highest ever in its history [Election Commission / Wikipedia]. The election results, announced on 4 May 2026, saw the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor Vijay, emerge as the single largest party by securing 108 seats.

In the 234-member legislative assembly where 118 seats are required for a majority, the TVK party was supported by Congress (5 seats), and CPI, CPM, VCK, and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) with 2 seats each.

With the backing of 121 MLAs, C. Joseph Vijay took the oath of office as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 10, 2026.

Major Fake News Spread During the Election Period

This historic shift also witnessed an unprecedented wave of coordinated fake news campaigns across digital media.

Targeting Stalin and DMK:

  • Claim: A fake news card was circulated claiming that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin challenged that if he lost the election, he would distribute his ₹3,000 crore worth of assets to the public.
  • Fact: Stalin’s official election affidavit submitted to the Election Commission of India declared total assets of ₹6.62 crore. The fabrication multiplied this figure by over 450 and invented a pledge that never occurred. No press conference, speech, or recording of this statement exists.
    Fact Crescendo
  • Claim: Edited videos were circulated claiming that Stalin said, “As long as DMK exists, we will not allow the deepam (lamp) to be lit at Thiruparankundram.”
Fact: The video was fabricated by splicing unrelated footage from a separate, older news event involving the Thiruparankundram temple into footage of Stalin speaking. Stalin made no such statement. The Thiruparankundram constituency, notably, was won by TVK’s candidate Nirmalkumar R. with a margin of 41,553 votes, the highest in the Madurai region, suggesting the religious provocation found little electoral traction. Fact Crescendo
  • Claim: A viral video shows Rahul Gandhi praising AIADMK during an election rally in Tamil Nadu.
  • Fact: The viral video is misleadingly clipped. Rahul Gandhi was not praising AIADMK in support of it; his full statement criticises the party’s current leadership and its alignment with BJP. Newschecker

Targeting TVK and Vijay :

  • Claim: A purported cover page of Frontline magazine states that actor-turned-politician Vijay has triggered a massive political wave in Tamil Nadu.
Fact: The viral image claiming to be a Frontline cover praising Vijay’s political wave in Tamil Nadu is not authentic. Newschecker

Fabricated Actor Endorsements

  • Claim: A fake news report published under the logo of Maalai Murasu claimed that actor Ajith Kumar stated “No Need” for a regime change.
  • Fact: Ajith’s official PR team completely denied this statement.
    Fact Crescendo
  • Claim: A video of actor Silambarasan (STR) circulated with captions claiming he was calling for ‘no regime change’ and supporting DMK’s re-election in 2026.
Fact: The video was from 2016 — a decade before this election. Silambarasan made no statement during the 2026 campaign. The video was re-uploaded with false date metadata and new narration overlaid to reverse its meaning. Fact Crescendo

Fake Polls and Impersonated Media:

  • Claim: Fake information was circulated under the names of Sun News and Polimer News claiming that 92% of government employees had voted for AIADMK.
  • Fact: Neither outlet published any such figure. No credible exit poll recorded this number. The newscards mimicked each outlet’s official visual layout closely, differing only in minor typographic details invisible to a casual viewer. Fact Crescendo
  • Claim: Fake news cards floated around claiming that prominent media houses India Today and IBC Tamil had predicted a major victory for DMK, winning between 160 and 200 seats in their opinion polls.
  • Fact: Neither outlet published these projections. IBC Tamil’s actual surveys showed materially different figures. The actual result, TVK winning 108 seats, comprehensively underestimated by every real pollster, makes the fabricated ‘DMK 160–200’ claim additionally remarkable as disinformation: it was projecting the exact opposite of the outcome. Altered Imagery and Digital Manipulation

Fact-checkers documented a clear trend of digitally editing photographs to support false political narratives:

  • Campaign Vehicles: A photo of AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palanisamy (EPS) was edited to replace an image of the late Jayalalithaa with one of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his campaign vehicle.
  • .Political Shifts: Following O. Panneerselvam’s (OPS) move to the DMK, an old 2021 photo of Udhayanidhi Stalin was edited to show OPS bowing to M.K. Stalin during a candidate interview
  • Mockery: A wall advertisement for VCK leader Thirumavalavan was edited to change his name from “Thiruma” to “Theruma” (a pun questioning his victory)

Old Footage as Post-Election Delegitimisation:

Taking advantage of the intense election atmosphere, older incidents were taken out of context and linked to the current election to spread rumours.

  • Claim: A viral video was shared claiming to show DMK senior leader and former Assembly Speaker Appavu physically removed from a 2026 vote-counting centre, presented as evidence of counting irregularities.
  • Fact: The video was from 2016, a Radhapuram constituency by-election a decade earlier. Notably, the 2026 results for Radhapuram show TVK’s Dr. Sathish Christopher winning with a margin of 12,313 votes over Appavu himself, suggesting no counting irregularity favoured either side. The video’s context was entirely fabricated. Fact Crescendo
  • Claim: A video was spread online claiming to show DMK MP Kanimozhi being chased away by angry voters during the 2026 campaign, depicting mass public rejection of DMK leadership.
  • Fact: The video was from the 2024 Parliamentary election. In the original context, residents were enthusiastically calling Kanimozhi over to speak with them. not rejecting her. Slowed playback and new narration completely reversed the meaning of what was happening on screen. Fact Crescendo
  • Claim: A viral video allegedly shows massive stacks of cash seized from a godown linked to a friend of DMK leader and Deputy CM, Udhayanidhi Stalin, ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections 2026.
  • Fact: The viral video is outdated. No credible or recent reports were found about any ED raid involving Udhayanidhi Stalin’s associates. Newschecker

We also noticed that misinformation relied on repurposing old or pre-existing footage to misrepresent current events:

  • Post-Election Narratives: A video of TVK women speaking rudely to police was circulated with the claim that it happened after the election results, even though the footage had been online at least two weeks before the results were announced.

Religious and Communal Polarization

  • Targeting the Muslim Community: False claims were spread that AIADMK leader D. Jayakumar stated he did not need Muslim votes to win, and that VCK MLA Sha Navas felt sidelined by his party because he is Muslim.
  • Religious Sites: Rumours circulated regarding the Thiruparankundram Dargah, claiming that an AIADMK MLA promised its removal if the NDA won, while another claim suggested Chief Minister Stalin promised a new law to allow animal sacrifices there.
