Two sets of social media posts circulated claiming that well-known public figures were preparing to contest provincial council elections, former Army Commander General Shavendra Silva with the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), and popular tuition teacher Dinesh Mutugula (“Mutugula Sir”) with either the SJB or the United National Party (UNP). Fact Crescendo investigated both claims and found them to be false.
Claim 1
Social Media Posts :
Posts circulated on social media, accompanied by a photograph showing former Army Commander Shavendra Silva appearing alongside Polonnaruwa SJB MP Kings Nelson, claiming that General Shavendra Silva was preparing to contest the North Central Provincial Council election under the Samagi Jana Balawegaya. Some posts also mentioned a family connection between the two men.

Following reader requests to verify this claim, we investigated as follows.
Fact-Check :
We searched every mainstream media outlet for any credible report confirming that retired General Shavendra Silva was joining the Samagi Jana Balawegaya or preparing to contest from the North Central Province. No such report was found.
We then contacted former Army Commander Shavendra Silva directly. At the time, he was abroad, delivering a series of invited lectures.
Former Army Commander Shavendra Silva
Shavendra Silva stated that these posts are a complete lie. He confirmed that he has made no such decision, that many people had been contacting him to inquire about the claim, and that it is an entirely baseless rumor.
Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB)
We also contacted the official media division of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya. Their response was unequivocal: the claim is entirely false. Former Army Commander Shavendra Silva has not joined the SJB, and no such announcement has been made by him or the party.
Based on the official confirmations from both parties, it is clear that this claim is false.
Who Is Kings Nelson, and What Is His Connection to Shavendra Silva?
Hewa Gajaman Paththinige Kins Kumara Nelson (K.K.S. Nelson) is a former provincial councilor and Member of Parliament. He is the son of former government minister H. G. P. Nelson and brother-in-law of General Shavendra Silva, with his sibling Sujeeva, married to General Shavendra Silva.
Claim 2
Social Media Posts :
Another series of posts claimed that Dinesh Mutugula, widely known as “Mutugula Sir,” one of Sri Lanka’s most popular private tuition teachers, was preparing to contest the Northwestern Provincial Council election under the Samagi Jana Balawegaya or the United National Party.

Fact-Check :
As with the Shavendra Silva posts, these claims circulated without any official confirmation from any of the parties named. We found no credible report from any mainstream media outlet confirming the claim.
Dinesh Mutugula (“Mutugula Sir”)
We contacted the coordinator of Dinesh Mutugula to verify the claim. The coordinator confirmed that the information is false. Dinesh Mutugula himself stated that he has no intention whatsoever of entering politics through any party. He will continue his service to society, but he is not entering the political arena.
Samagi Jana Balawegaya and United National Party
We contacted the media divisions of both the Samagi Jana Balawegaya and the United National Party. Both confirmed that these posts are false as well.
Dinesh Mutugula has not joined either party and has made no announcement about contesting any election.

Conclusion :
Our investigation confirms that both sets of social media posts are false. Former Army Commander General Shavendra Silva is not contesting the North Central Provincial Council election from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya. Shavendra Silva and the SJB have both confirmed that the claim has no foundation.
Separately, popular tuition teacher Dinesh Mutugula (“Mutugula Sir”) is not contesting the Northwestern Provincial Council election from either the SJB or the UNP.
